It's official! The car scrappage scheme has had a positive impact on shifting motors, reckons the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
New car registrations came in at just under two million cars in 2009 with over a fifth of those credited to the government's car scrappage scheme which sees customers receiving a £2,000 discount off the price of a modern motor when they trade in their ten-years-or-older bangers.
It's good news for car manufacturers who were expecting an absolute drubbing in 2009 but it's worth bearing in mind that 2009's new car registrations are still the lowest since 1995 and there are ever darker clouds on the horizon for the motoring industry; the car scrappage scheme is to officially end on the 28th February this year. Factor in the recent rise in VAT from 15% back to 17.5% and car manufacturers are understandably nervous that they could be in for a very tough 2010; a view confirmed by the SMMT who believe 2010 sales will not be as positive as 2009.
