VOLVO S60

Expected to go on-sale in September, the Volvo has not yet been rated by the New Car Assembly Programme (NCAP). This compact executive has won praise for its pioneering safety measures. The most impressive feature is its Collision Warning with Full Autobrake and Pedestrian Detection System, which will automatically detect passers-by who step into the path of the car, then deploy the brakes if the driver doesn't respond. Other mind-bending safety features include a system which will warn you if you're about to pull into the path of a vehicle in your blind spot.

2010 HONDA INSIGHT HYBRID

Awarded a very respectable 90% NCAP safety score for adult protection, this hybrid is chock full of high-tech safety measures to ensure your family's safety. Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) strengthens the body of the car against collisions with vehicles of all heights and a complex airbag system protect front and rear passengers from front and side collisions.

KIA SORENTO

Featuring anti-lock braking, front and rear airbags and impact beams, this seven-seater was awarded five stars by the NCAP. The car was awarded maximum points for protection of young infants.

CHEVROLET CRUZE

Anti-lock braking, traction control and airbags in the front, side and roof led the NCAP to award the Cruze a whopping 96% in the adult safety test. Maximum points were awarded for the protection of children up to 3.

BMW X1

The NCAP noted that the passenger compartment remained stable during frontal impact. Dummy readings indicated that both the driver and the passenger were well protected and the car scored maximum points in side barrier impact, with good protection of all body regions.

MAZDA 3

The Mazda's Dynamic Stability Control works with anti-lock braking to reduce engine power and regulate braking in critical situations. Six airbags in the front, roof and curtains help to protect all passengers in the case of an accident. The NCAP noted that the windscreen pillar moved by only 2mm during frontal impact.
