Our specialists here at buyacar think there are a few things you should know before making that new car purchase.

In the first of a two-part series, we offer you some essential tips to help you buy that new car with confidence. Over the next two weeks we'll offer help to first time buyers and experienced consumers alike (whether you decide to buy from us or not).

1. Know your budget or monthly finance affordability. You'll feel good to know you have worked out the basics and then bought within your means.

2. Make a list of your desired new car specification. What do you need in terms of boot space, fuel consumption, performance etc? What are your desired extras, such as parking sensors, AC, cruise control etc?

3. Scutinise your part-exchange deal. Don't be hoodwinked into thinking you're getting a good deal if the dealer offers you an inflated price for your old car.

Sometimes it's worth taking a hit on your PX if you can negotiate a big discount on your new vehicle. This might sound obvious, but just do your maths. The important figure here is 'cost to change' i.e. how much is the discount off the list price, including your old car.

4. Ask about APR. Dealerships will try and give you the flat rate - this will always be lower than the true APR.

5. Scrutinise your part-exchange deal. Ask whether the figure you are given is for an exchange in 8-10 weeks (factory order time) or now. Will that price change or is it fixed?

6. Always take a test drive, and always take your time. If you can make an appointment beforehand so you won't be rushed when viewing/testing.

7.Make sure you test drive the exact car you are looking to buy. Rather than a different specification or engine.

8.Take a test drive at a dealership. Before finding the best deal at buyacar
