Alternative fuels represent a shift away from non-renewable fuel sources such as petrol and diesel. The move is towards energy that is sustainable and doesn't produce harmful waste products when used.
Although most alternatives currently present technological challenges, they are rapidly becoming the aspiration of most drivers and are starting to filter down into mainstream cars. Here we take a look at the alternatives and at the same time provide an insight into the cars of the future.

What are alternative fuels?
Essentially, alternative fuels are any substances that can be used as fuel and are classified as non-conventional. Conventional fuels are those currently made readily available to us such as petrol and diesel, which are derived from naturally occurring oil - a fossil fuel.
Why do we need alternative fuels?
Driving cars that use petrol & diesel has a significant impact on the environment. The every day use of cars across the UK produces a massive amount of carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas and a recognised cause of global warming.
Not only does using petrol & diesel have a major impact on the environment, but oil supplies won't last forever. Some estimates are that existing oil supplies may run out in the next 50 years! Certainly, the amount of oil available is limited as it takes millions of years to be produced in nature. As a result, it's important to look at alternative sustainable fuels in order to protect our future.
