Whether you're a company man driving a thousand miles a week, or a shrewd buyer with an eye on a vehicle's sell-on value, miles per gallon have never been more relevant.
Here are our Top 5 fuel efficient cars on the market in 2010. Most importantly we tell you how much you can save.
TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID
Still out in front in terms of cash saving and enviro-friendly driving is the Prius.
For starters there's no road tax to pay because the carbon emissions are so low. That means if you invest in this nifty hybrid for ten years, there is a saving of almost £2,000 over a 'band h' petrol or diesel car. Delivering 50mpg the efficiency is up there with some of the best motors on the market.
But it gets better than that. If you're driving at 31mph or under, you can switch to EV mode, using electric power only, which will slash your fuel costs even further. A solar powered ventilation system will also reduce your outgoings. Price estimates begin at £16,000. Look after your investment and watch the sell on value hold its price, even if you are in for the long term.
2010 HONDA INSIGHT HYBRID
This hybrid will officially give you 41mpg but a Fuel Economy poll recently put the figure at 83.10mpg.
Now if you are a family driving the average 10,000 miles per year, your official petrol cost on the 243 gallons (at £5 per gallon) is an impressive £1,215. At the poll rating, the cost is less than half at £602 - or £50-a-month. For a family or small business man on a budget, we reckon that's economy motoring at its best.
The car's Eco-Assist system will both increase your fuel efficiency and teach you how to drive more efficiently. Can it get any better? Prices are expected to begin at £16,000.
CITROEN C2
Priced at roughly £14,000, the Citroen C2 is stylish and efficient. Because the Citroen C2 is light, even the higher performance models can give you more than 50mpg. Customers can choose between three petrol models and one diesel.
RENAULT CLIO
For the best fuel efficiency and the least carbon emissions, customers should opt for the Extreme dCi 86 3Dr model. This offers upwards of 65mpg but only 115g/km in CO2 emissions, costing only £35 a year in road tax. The spacious five door will also include integrated TomTom satellite navigation.
PEUGEOT RCZ HYBRID
Expected later this year and estimated at £20,000, the Peugeot RCZ Hybrid is a stunning 2+2 coupe. According to manufacturer's the four wheel drive - powered by a 2.0litre diesel engine and an electric powertrain - will give owners a massive 76.35mpg and carbon emissions could be as low as 95g/km, which would exempt owners from paying road tax. Prices will begin at just shy of £20,000 for the 1.6litre manual model.
