Buying a green car doesn't necessarily mean buying a hybrid or buying an electric car just yet, though the launch dates for electric cars to buy start this year. Expect to hear a lot more from electric car manufacturers in the future.

There are several diesel cars on the market however which are more fuel efficient than hybrids, making their CO₂ emissions equivalent to or lower than a Prius, for example.

Currently buying green is as much about changing the direction of what you buy - towards smaller, more fuel efficient engines in more space efficient cars.
