Dodge was originally founded in 1900 to produce parts for Detroit's rapidly expanding motor industry but by 1914 the company was building its own models. By 1928, the firm had passed into the hands of the Chrysler Corporation and it eventually branched out into manufacturing trucks in addition to automobiles. Dodge was ranked second in terms of US car sales as early as 1916.

With the demise of sister brand Plymouth in 1999 Dodge became the Chrysler's low-price leading brand in addition to being its performance division.
