Previously seen as something of an auto oddity, electric cars are now set to flood showrooms in 2011, bringing eerily silent motoring to the masses.
The players making the first move are Nissan with its much touted Leaf (£23,350) and Mitsubishi with its iMiev which recently had £10k lopped off its asking price to stand a chance of competing with the former.
With the government incentive of £5k off both cars, the iMiev will now cost exactly the same as the Leaf. Expect not to hear them as they pass you on the street when deliveries start early next year.
The French aren't slacking in this area either. Citroen will be offering its C-Zero and you can now reserve the Peugeot iOn. Both are electric city cars that share the same tech as the iMiev.
What the difference is between the three apart from their branding remains to be seen but prices have yet to be announced by either French company. In the meantime, all three offer up four doors, four seats and a range of eighty miles.
A word of warning though. If you want to buy an EV and take advantage of the government grant scheme of £5,000, we suggest you place your order sooner rather than later. The government recently announced that the number of subsidies available to buyers has been slashed from the first 46,000 EVs bought to the first 8,600.
