Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as Scuderia Ferrari, the company sponsored drivers and manufactured race cars before moving into production of street-legal vehicles in 1947 as Ferrari S.p.A.. Throughout its history, the company has been noted for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula One, where it continues to enjoy great success winning the driver's and constructors World titles on many occasions.
After years of financial struggles, Enzo Ferrari sold the company's sports car division to the FIAT group in 1969 to ensure continued financial backing. He retained control of the racing division until his death in 1988 at the age of 90. Earlier that year he had overseen the launch of the Ferrari F40; the last new Ferrari to be launched before his death, and arguably one of the most famous supercars ever made.
The current road-going Ferrari range includes the F430 V8 Berlinetta which produces an amazing 483bhp and delivers a 0-62mph time of just 4 seconds. Those that prefer the wind in their hair can choose the F430 Spyder and for the ultimate F430 experience, there is the Scuderia which produces 530bhp and is 100kg lighter than the standard F430 Berlinetta.
For V12 models, the current Ferrari range features the 2-seater Grand Turismo 599 GTB Fiorano or the front-engined 2+2 612 Scaglietti. In today's automotive world a Ferrari still remains the motoring fantasy desire of most red-blooded males.
