The decline of the once world-leading indigenous British motor industry is a sorry tale but there is one manufacturer that was established at virtually the dawn of motoring that is still very much alive today. Based in Malvern in Worcestershire, the Morgan Motor Company was founded by Mr H.F.S Morgan in 1909 and the firm remains a family owned business today.
Mr Morgan?s son, Peter, ran the company until a few years before his death in 2003. Peter's son, Charles, is now in day to day control of the firm.
Around 163 people are employed and all cars continue to be assembled by hand. Unlike many mass producers today, the Morgan Motor Company is in the enviable position of having long waiting lists for their products, with customers being prepared to wait to own a Morgan motor car. The current waiting time for a newly assembled Morgan is from one to two years depending on the model required.
Many of Morgan's earliest cars were three wheelers or cycle cars, the first being V-Twin engined models built from 1911 to 1939. These were joined by the F-Series three-wheels from 1932 to 1952. Morgan's first four-wheeled vehicle was first introduced in 1936. This model was appropriately named the 4/4 because of its four wheels and four cylinder powerplant.
Today's range includes an updated version of the 4/4 and the Plus 4, the two-seater Roadster along with the more contemporary Aero and Aeromax.
Amazingly, this small but highly successful manufacturer has also developed an eco-friendly showcase electric model known as the Life Car. It features impressive, state-of-the-art technology and it has raised the profile of Morgan across the world.
