Henry Royce constructed his first automobile in 1904 and in May the same year he met Charles Rolls who sold quality cars in London. The two forged a partnership whereby Royce continued to build prestige cars and Rolls then sold them.
The venture became quickly successful and by March 1906 the Rolls-Royce Motor Company had been formed which lead to the launch of the famous six-cylinder Silver Ghost hailed as 'the best car in the world'.
Just before World War I Rolls-Royce entered into the manufacturing of aero engines and this continues today, although this part of the business has been totally separate from the car manufacturing operation since 1971, at a time which saw the split of the company into two totally detached businesses, with the aero engine manufacturer taken over by the state to save it from bankruptcy while the automotive business was purchased by the then large British engineering group Vickers plc.
In 1998, Vickers plc sold Rolls-Royce Motors to Volkswagen. However, the by now successful independent Rolls-Royce Aero engine business held many of the brand rights for the Rolls-Royce marque and blocked co-operation with Volkswagen, favouring rival German manufacturer BMW over the Wolfsburg based company.
Eventually, all parties came to an agreement whereby BMW have the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand and Volkswagen is able to use the Bentley marque. BMW- Rolls-Royce constructed an impressive new manufacturing facility in Goodwood in Sussex while Volkswagen retained the original Crewe plant for the building of Bentley motor cars.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom was launched in January 2003. This was first model to be produced by the new BMW owned Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited. A second handbuilt model, a convertible known as the Phantom Drophead Coupe, has recently been introduced.
