Smart originally started out as joint venture between the Swiss watchmaker Swatch and Mercedes' parent company Daimler-Benz in 1993. The company, at first called Micro Compact Car AG, produced the tiny 'Smart Car' at its base in Biel, Switzerland. Production later switched to Germany after Daimler-Benz bought Swatch's stake in the manufacturer.
To ensure that what was then called the City-Coupe could withstand collisions from larger and heavier vehicles, Smart's engineers produced the "tridion" safety cell which could easily be recognised by the black or silver segments of the bodywork. Constructed from three layers of steel reinforced at strategic points, the tridion cell was designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the Smart's occupants while side impacts were defended by steel door beams and reinforced axles. The safety cell continues in today's smartfortwo.
Considerable sales success with the original model resulted in the ill-fated expansion of the Smart car range with the introduction of the Roadster and Roadster-Coupe in 2003 and later the Forfour hatchback in 2004. Despite their excellent design these models failed to thrive mainly due to the fact that many potential purchasers found them to be too expensive when compared to nearest rivals. As a result, Smart's fortunes were to take a spectacular downturn which the saw parent company nearly dispensing with the Smart brand altogether. However, Daimler-Benz?s then CEO Dieter Zetsche stepped in just in time to rescue the subsidiary by dropping the Roadster, Roadster Coupe and Forfour, and slimming the model range down to just one model, the two-seater City-Coupe rebranded as the smartfortwo.
Today, more than 770,000 units have been produced and the Smart brand (or smart without capitals as the PR people insist) operates in 36 countries around the world. Slightly larger than the original, the second-generation Fortwo was launched in 2006. Its appearance has remained little altered while the general quality of its interior has been improved along with safety. Best of all, engineers have sought to improve the often derided automatic / manual transmission to good effect.
