Translated from Korean, the name SsangYong means twin dragons. South Korea's fourth largest motor manufacturer was originally established in 1954 as the Hadonghwan Motor Company. The company began vehicle production by building Jeeps for the American Army.
At the start of 1976 the firm found itself constructing a variety of special purpose vehicles and in the following year its named changed briefly to Dong-A Motor. However, the SsangYong Business Group took over the manufacturer which resulted in another name change to SsangYong Motor to reflect the company's new ownership.
In 1991 SsangYong forged a technology partnership with Mercedes? parent Daimler-Benz but in 1997 the Daewoo Group, one of South Korea's largest industrial conglomerates, bought a controlling stake in the business. Just three years later in 2000, Daewoo's dire financial situation meant the sale of all their interests in SsangYong and in 2004 China's largest and most successful motor company, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), bought 51 percent of SsangYong Motor giving the firm some much needed stability.
Today's SsangYong range is a far cry from those original Jeeps produced for the US Army in 1954. The range starts with the Kyron 4x4, moves up the larger Rexton four-wheel drive and tops out with the oddly-styled but very capacious Rodius, a people carrier with enough space to seat seven in comfort and still able to carry all their associated luggage too. Both SsangYong 4x4's are tough, diesel powered and dependable. However, although you shouldn't expect class-leading handling and on-road dynamics, the SsangYong brand does offer excellent value for money.
