Here in the UK, Suzuki is probably better known for its motorcycles than its cars but the Japanese company is the world's 12th largest automobile manufacturer with production facilities in 23 different countries. Offering an intrinsically Japanese range of compact and well engineered small cars, the brand has carved out a respectable market niche on these shores.
Suzuki was founded in 1909 by Michio Suzuki but it wasn't until the mid 30s that the company produced its first motorcar which sported a tiny 13bhp 800cc engine. In the mid 50s the company launched the Suzulight, a model that was to prove integral in ushering in Japan's lightweight car age. With Suzuki motorcycles winning races on the track all the while, the car manufacturing operation ticked along nicely, bringing us the first Alto in 1979 and the original Swift in 1983.
Suzuki is another Japanese marque with a successful history of producing 4x4 vehicles. The Vitara 4x4 arrived in the late 80s and the latest Grand Vitara can still be found in the line-up today alongside the smaller and more road-biased SX4. Otherwise, Suzuki can offer the latest Swift supermini which combines sporty styling with an engaging driving experience.
Suzuki's small car expertise could come further and further to the fore as environmental pressures take their toll on the UK market, so expect to hear a lot more from this manufacturer in the future.
