The Ford Motor Company's interest in building commercial vehicles was apparent almost from the very beginning of operations, the first trucks appearing in 1905 only two years after Henry Ford's first cars.
For most historians however the history of Ford trucks actually begins with the Model T.
The Model T Ford light truck was by far the most common single-make van in Britain from about 1912 through to after the First World War. A number of truck-type bodies were produced by external suppliers for the Model T chassis. These included just about everything from pick-ups to fire tenders.
Using Model T mechanicals, the one-ton-rated Ford Model TT had a number of unique features which provided it with a much higher payload capacity than the light-duty Model T chassis. It came only as a chassis cab at first, with cargo bodies being sourced from outside suppliers. Ford didn't offer an Express body pick-up until 1924 and it sold well from day one.
Later, Ford produced the E83W 10cwt commercial in many different guises which continued production throughout the war finally ceasing in 1957, making it one of the most successful and enduring lightweight Ford commercial vehicles of all time. The Ford Thames 400E followed in 1957 and production of this highly popular van range continued until September 1965 after 187,000 had been built.
The smaller 307E Anglia-shaped Thames van was launched in June 1961 replacing the side-valve engined vans based on the little 100E Popular. There were two models to choose from, the basic 5cwt and the more "upmarket" 7cwt version. Popular with Royal Mail, Ford's Escort van was designed as a small workhorse. Ford stopped manufacturing in 2002 but the van has remained enormously popular with the buoyant used market.
Ford's commercial vehicles have always been highly thought of around the world, none more so than the legendary Ford Transit first introduced in 1965. There have been several generations of this commercial workhorse and numerous facelifts. The latest version, the Mark 7 Ford Transit, was awarded the International Van of the Year prize in 2007.
