With a two-wheel drive single cab and four different 4x4 versions, the Isuzu Rodeo is a truly global product on sale in more than 130 countries across the world.
It's built in Thailand, badged as a Holden in Australia and available as a Chevrolet in the USA. Like other pick-ups, this one has the chrome bling, the double-cab body and the muscular engine to fulfil the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200 role of tough workhorse or 4x4 leisure vehicle. But even then, it feels resolutely work-orientated.
You wouldn't pose in this pick-up. And that's exactly the way loyal customers like it.
Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company created a joint operation with the Tokyo Gas Electric Industrial Company to manufacture cars in 1916. By 1918 they had gained a license to build and sell cars designed by the British manufacturer Wolseley. This began a long history of international joint ventures for what was to become Isuzu.
In 1922 the first Wolseley model A-9 car is produced in Japan and by 1924 Isuzu's first truck, the CP, appeared. Later that same year, the company had officially changed its name to Isuzu Motors Limited and the firm went on to become one of Japan's largest truck producers.
However, car and light commercial vehicle production continued with many models being sold under different brand names around the world. American giant, General Motors (GM) took a substantial stake in Isuzu in 1971 and this was to start close co-operation between the two companies which would last up until 2009.
Production of the Isuzu Trooper 4x4 SUV began in 1983 and was to continue until 2002. Known for its toughness and reliability, a considerable number of these vehicles were unofficially imported direct from Japan into the UK and European markets.
Respected for being able to haul big payloads the Isuzu Rodeo pick-up was first introduced to the market in 2002 and it's been a consistent best-seller within its market sector ever since.
