Part of the Fiat Group and based in Turin, Italy, IVECO is now one of Europe's largest truck, bus and van manufacturers producing around 200,000 commercial vehicles and 460,000 diesel engines a year. The company's name is an acronym for Industrial Vehicle Corporation.
The firm was established on 1st January 1975 through the merger of five manufacturers operating in Italy, France and Germany. Fiat Veicoli Industriali of Turin, OM of Brescia, Lancia Veicoli Speciali based in Bolzano, French producer Unic located in Trappes and Magirus in Ulm combined forces to create IVECO which later acquired 60 percent of Spain's leading truck manufacturer, ENASA, makers of the Pegaso brand of commercial vehicles in 1990.
In 1986 Ford's European truck operation became part of the brand. In 1998 Iveco Ford's EuroCargo, was introduced and sold in over ninety countries. Produced initially at the original Ford Truck plant in Slough, this model became a UK market leader for many years.
