Toyota introduced the second generation Stout in 1964 and this was replaced by the first Hilux pick-up when production began in March 1968. The seventh generation model was introduced in 2005 and the Hilux remains one of the globe's most popular pick-ups produced in five countries, with European models being sourced from Toyota's Durban plant in South Africa.
The Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional sturdiness and reliability, even during sustained heavy use and abuse, and is often referred to as "The Indestructible Car".
Toyota started in 1933 as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works and under the direction of the founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda production of the company's first vehicles began in 1935 with the A1 passenger car and the G1.
Vehicles were originally sold under the name "Toyoda" sourced from the family name of the company's founder, Kiichirō Toyoda. Two years after vehicle production began Toyota Motor Company was established as an independent company in its own right in 1937. The word "Toyoda" literally means "fertile rice paddies," and the name change helped to distance the company from its old-fashioned agricultural origins.
Toyota owns Hino, Japan's leading truck and bus manufacturer since 1973. However, Toyota also produces light commercial vehicles itself and the names, Hilux, Hiace and Dyna are much respected the world over.
Introduced in 1967, the Hiace was offered as cab-over pick-up, delivery van, and commuter minibus. Today, five generations later, the Hiace remains a best-selling van known for its robustness and reliability. The Dyna light truck also serves throughout the world and is available today as a Dropside and Tipper (3-Way) in mid-wheelbase form and as a long wheelbase dropside version.
The original Toyota pickup was the Type G1 1.5 ton stake-bed commercial truck of 1935. After the Second World War Toyota introduced the Toyopet Model SB compact pickup truck, the ancestor of the Stout, which remained in production from 1947 through 1957.
