Vauxhall Motors are a subsidiary of General Motors and prior to 1925, the parent company assembled trucks in Brazil manufactured at their Canadian works. This enabled them to import vehicles into Britain under Imperial Preference, which favoured products from the British Empire as far as import duties were concerned. Such trucks were marketed as "British Chevrolet".
After GM took ownership of Vauxhall Motors, production was transferred to Luton, Vauxhall's headquarters, with production commencing there in 1929. Bedford Vehicles, usually shortened to just Bedford, later became a subsidiary of Vauxhall and was established in 1930 constructing commercial vehicles.
Bedford Vehicles was a leading international truck manufacturer with substantial export sales of light, medium, and heavy trucks throughout the world. It became GM Europe's most profitable venture for several years.
In 1994, GM ceased production of Bedford vehicles with manufacturing transferring to the Vauxhall brand name at their Luton plant where both cars and vans were produced. By 2002 however, all car production was transferred to Ellesmere Port with the manufacture of vans sold under the Vauxhall, Opel, Renault and Nissan badges throughout Europe being retained at Luton.
Today Vauxhall continues to produce a range of panel vans and light commercial vehicles. These feature the highly popular car based vans of the Corsavan and Astravan along with a range of panel vans like the Movano and Vivaro models.
