Volkswagen's commercial vehicle production stretches back to 1947 to when the manufacturer's Dutch importer Ben Pon sketched 'a box on wheels.' Two years later the general director of the Volkswagen factory, Heinrich Nordoff, supported the production of that 'sketch' and quite literally took the box on wheels design and made refinements.
The rounded front sections which were added to the square edged box created the friendly familiar face of the Bulli known the world over. In 1949 the prototype of the Transporter was unveiled in Wolfsburg. It was immediately christened the 'Bulli' but trademark infringements forbade the use of the name.
Full scale production of the Transporter started in 1950 and by 1962 the 1,000,000th Transporter had left the production line. In 1967 the Transporter lost its smiling face and became the wide screen view T2 with a panorama windscreen. By 1968 2,000,000 Transporter vans had been built.
In 1975 Volkswagen introduced the first LT utility vehicle, the T3 Transporter arrived in 1979 and by 1982 Volkswagen had introduced the Caddy Pick up based on the Golf. The production of the fourth generation Transporter (T4) commenced in 1990, the year that the Transporter celebrated its 40th anniversary. 6,000,000 had been produced over three generations since 1950.
In 1996 the Caddy van and LT2 were introduced to the commercial vehicle market. In 2003 the newly introduced, all-new Transporter T5 went on to win the 2004 What Van? Van Of The Year award.
The all new Caddy was launched in the UK in 2004 and 2006 saw the arrival of the new Crafter. The next year Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles celebrated 60 years of Volkswagen Vans and the production of 10 million Transporters in Hanover with rock band, The Who and 71,000 Volkswagen fans. By 2008 the new Caddy Maxi range had been introduced offering a panel van, window van and the Caddy Maxi Life.
