Which used Lexus IS should you buy?

The Lexus IS is a stylish and tech-laden alternative to upmarket four-door saloons like the BMW 3 Series, its German rival the Audi A4 and Sweden’s Volvo S60.

Launched in 2013, the Lexux IS was thoroughly revamped in 2017. Later models come only with a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid set-up (named Lexus IS 300h), while early versions were available with a turbocharged petrol engine. If you’re after a sporty drive, the latter is the model to go for.

However, the Lexus IS 300h is the more popular model on BuyaCar. Lexus calls it a self-charging hybrid, which is marketing speak for a hybrid format that has a small battery that you cannot plug into the mains, but is charged by the engine while driving and provides electric assistance.

The benefits of the hybrid system include low emissions and excellent fuel economy in towns and cities, plus smooth and quiet running.

What used Lexus IS trim levels are available?

As our list below demonstrates, there is not a vast range of specification levels for the Lexus IS. Whichever version you choose, you can be guaranteed a comfortable, premium car.

Lexus IS

In January 2019, the range was simplified into three trim levels, with the entry version known simply as the Lexus IS. But there was nothing entry-level about the specification; there’s plenty of equipment thrown in.

Among the highlights was the Lexus Safety System+, which uses technologies to prevent a collision and to reduce the consequences of one should the worst happen.

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Push-button start
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED rear lights
  • Heated front seats
  • Seven-inch media system with sat-nav
  • Six speakers
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Bluetooth
  • Digital radio
  • Lexus Safety System+

Lexus IS F Sport

The Lexus IS F Sport cost around £4,500 more than the standard Lexus IS when the car was new, but the price difference will be much smaller when buying a used example. It’s the perfect trim if you fancy a Lexus IS with a sportier flavour, particularly inside where the instruments are inspired by the exotic Lexus LFA supercar. Other highlights include:

  • 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels
  • F Sport grille
  • Unique bumper design
  • LED front foglights
  • Heated sports seats with eight-way electric adjustment
  • Aluminium sports pedals
  • Perforated leather trim on the steering wheel and gear lever

Lexus IS Executive Edition

If you want the most car for your money, the Lexus IS Executive Edition is the model to seek out. Offered with the hybrid Lexus IS, it comes sumptuously equipped.

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Sat-nav
  • Full leather interior

Lexus IS Sport

Not to be confused with the Lexus IS F Sport, the Lexus IS Sport was released in the autumn of 2015. It’s available on both the hybrid and petrol models. Equipment highlights include:

  • Five-spoke black 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Black finish for the door mirrors and front grille
  • Black cloth and grey leather effect trim
  • Sat-nav

Is a used Lexus IS a good buy?

The Lexus IS is one of the most distinctive cars of its type, especially following the 2017 update, which means you’re guaranteed to stand out in the office car park.

The interior is similarly stylish, with a high-quality feel throughout and a sense that everything is built to last.

Throw into the mix Japanese brand’s excellent reputation for reliability and you can see why the Lexus IS appeals to those who want something a little different.
