The Audi A1 shot onto the car scene in 2010, and immediately into the hearts of the fashion-conscious who appreciated luxury and build-quality in a small car.

As you may have seen by the sheer number on British roads, Audi really struck a chord with its smallest car. The A1 even managed to become the UK’s 20th best selling car in 2013, and has sold in big numbers since.

Subsequently, there are hundreds on the market. They range from the boisterous 228hp S1, to the frugal 1.6TDI that’s capable of more than 50mpg, even when tested in real world driving conditions.

Used Audi A1 (2010-present) deals

Distinct angular looks and a class-leading interior drove flocks of buyers into Audi showrooms. Its critics will tell you that the A1 is just a dressed up Volkswagen Polo, because they are nearly mechanically identical underneath the bodywork.

The extra money can be felt and seen in the interior however. Leather seats, good entertainment levels of equipment, and a quality in the buttons and stalks are palpably better than a Volkswagen Polo.

There’s also much more choice when it comes to picking the Audi. A1s are available in 1.0, 1.2, and 2.0-litre petrol powered flavour, as well as 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel varieties. And over the course of its production you could have it with a 5 or 6-speed manual, as well as a 7-speed automatic. And that’s before we get on to spec.

SE is the most basic spec and generally start at £135 a month. Despite being the cheapest, it it still gets alloy wheels, air conditioning, and iPod connectivity.

Sport trim gets bigger wheels, fog lights, bluetooth, and sports suspension. These start at around £150 a month.

S Line adds a body kit and bigger wheels. There are also Black and Contrast editions with different roofline colours and even bigger wheels. These are around £175 a month.

Audi A1 deal for fuel economy

Audi A1 1.6 TDI
The most economical A1 is the 1.6 TDI with a manual gearbox. Real world economy testing shows that it can achieve 54.6mpg in mixed driving environments. The 114hp engine is great to use too, and never feels as slow as some economy-minded cars. Expect to lose around 2.2 mpg for having the automatic instead of the manual.

Best used Audi A1 deal for value

Audi A1 1.0 TFSI
You might scoff at the idea of a premium German brand offering much in terms of value, but the A1 makes an especially savvy used buy. The 1.0TFSI engine models are a happy medium between the more economical but less refined diesel engines, and the more expensive and more powerful larger petrol powered cars.

Sport is the mid-range trim level in between SE and S-Line and offers a good amount of kit without getting too pricey. 2016 registered cars with less than 15,000 miles generally start at less than £160 a month.

Best used Audi A1 deals for young drivers

Audi A1 1.2 TFSI
Premium German cars and young drivers aren’t exactly a marriage made in heaven. However, the A1 is the smallest car that Audi makes, and the 1.2TFSI has the lowest insurance group rating of the A1s.

All of the regular trims (S, SE, and S-Line) are in insurance group 9, so any one of them would be good for younger drivers.

Best used Audi A1 deals for families

Audi A1 Sportback
Don’t get confused by Sportback name. It just means that this is the five door version of the A1. The A1 isn’t a huge car, but the additional doors make a big difference when it comes to loading kids in and out.

We’d also recommend getting a car without the sports suspension, as this is makes the ride quite harsh over poor roads. On smoother roads, it does make for a more engaging drive, but you don’t want little ‘uns being sick in the back.

Best used Audi A1 deals for performance

Audi S1
The Audi S1 makes a very upmarket hot hatch. All-wheel drive ensures that the 228hp can be put onto the road safely, and it’ll storm to 155mph.

It’s grown up when you want it to be, and not so grown-up when you don’t want it to be.

Best used Audi A1 deals for gadgets

Audi A1 S-Line
It’s no surprise that the most lavishly specified A1s are the best for gadget geeks. S-Line gets you nice leather and big wheels, but you’ll also find Audi’s dynamics systems. With this, drivers can play with the engine and suspension settings via three modes - auto, dynamic, and efficiency.

If you truly love your technology, look for an A1 with cruise control, rain sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
