The Audi A3 is more than 20 years old now, but when it was first released it struck a chord with UK buyers wanting a small premium hatchback.

Today, the ethos behind the A3 remains the same. Its build quality is unrivalled in its segment, even by the Volkswagen Golf, a car that is mechanically very similar.

It’s available with a raft of diesel and petrol engines, with three or five doors, as a convertible, and as a saloon. It even has a high performance model called the RS 3.

2012 saw the current A3 launched, and an updated version was released in 2016. Expect to see an-all new A3 next year too, which means there are good deals on new and nearly new examples.

Used Audi A3 (2012-present) deals

An Audi A3 is not the cheapest family hatchback you can buy but it is one of the most rounded in terms of quality, comfort, practicality and driving pleasure. To this list can be added that all-important quality: a strong image.

Naturally, none of this comes cheaply with even a four-year-old 2.0 TDI SE 3dr costing from around £9290 or £135 a month. Its more popular and plentiful five-door equivalent costs still more: from around £10,299 or £160 a month. In return, you get a well-built car that still feels fresh, even with tens of thousands of miles on the clock.

Petrol versions of the car (badged TFSI) are most popular, offering smooth performance and good fuel economy. Even the smallest 1-litre engine is powerful enough for any journey.

The diesel engines offer better fuel economy, but - at just over 50mpg in real-world driving, it's not much better than 1-litre petrol cars.

The trim range is fairly straightforward. SE, the most basic, has air conditioning and alloy wheels, and rides on comfort suspension, which makes it the most comfortable version. Sports adds firmer, adaptive sports suspension with larger alloy wheels.

S line brings luxury touches including brighter xenon headlights, part-leather trim and still larger alloy wheels. Black Edition goes a step further with sportier black detailing.

In addition, some versions have Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive system which boosts grip when accelerating on slippery surfaces. Prices start from around £15,500, or £233 a month.

Best used Audi A3 deal for fuel economy

Audi A3 1.6 TDI SE

This smallest diesel engine just over 50mpg in real-world driving (ignore the official figure of over 70mpg), whether powering five or three-door A3s. Emissions are as low as 99g/km CO2, meaning that examples registered before 31 March 2017 attract zero road tax.

Best used Audi A3 deal for value

Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport 5dr

Sport trim is only around £1000 more than SE but comes with more equipment, as long as you can tolerate the firmer ride that comes with its sports suspension. The 2.0 TDI engine is more powerful than the smaller 1.6, without using much more fuel.

Best used Audi A3 deals for young drivers

Audi A3 1.2 TFSI Sport 3dr

No A3 is exactly cheap to insure but the low-powered 1.2 TFSI 105PS version makes a good fist of being so with an insurance group rating of 14. What’s more, prices start at less than £10,000, or around £150 a month.

Best used Audi A3 deals for families

Audi A3 1.0 TFSI SE Sportback

Strong performance combined with near-50mpg economy in real-world driving are a family friendly combination but what seals this deal is the Sportback’s 380-litre boot (the same size as a VW Golf’s) and useful 1,220 litres seats-down load space. SE trim gives a more cushioned ride than the more expensive sportier trims, too.

Best used Audi A3 deal for performance

Audi RS 3 Sportback auto

No question: with 0-62mph possible in just over four seconds, the range-topping RS 3 with S tronic automatic transmission and quattro four-wheel drive is the performance A3. Prices start at around £32,000 or £390 a month, a big saving on the model’s current list price of £45,000.
