Best blue cars
No one wants to feel blue after buying a new car – check out our favourite blue-blooded, blue chip cars available in cool colours
Blue is a colour that covers a huge spectrum - meaning the best blue cars offer an awful lot of variety. The main options are dark blue, baby blue and light blue, but there are more niche shades such as greenish-blues, greyish-blues, and yellowish-blues. In fact, blue is so popular that some car brands use it as the colour for their flagship models – Hyundai does this with its performance cars.
Along with a massive choice of blue shades, there is also a great selection of car types that come with blue paint. At one end of the scale, there are upmarket SUVs from the likes of Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar, while at the opposite end there are small hatchbacks from brands such as Kia and Peugeot. It really is the case that if you are looking for one of the best blue cars, the world is your oyster. To help narrow things down, we’ve shortlisted eight of the best blue cars from a range of car types.
Thanks to the type of paint blue cars normally have, looking after the bodywork is fairly low effort. Flat or metallic paint are the most common and keeping these clean requires nothing more glamorous than a bucket, a sponge, some car shampoo and a water supply. Using a hand car wash puts the effort almost down to zero. Flat paint can make more of an initial visual statement while metallic paint can make a car sparkle in strong light.
The models listed below are grouped into four categories: baby blue cars, dark blue cars, light blue cars and unusual blue cars. So whether you're after a subtle bluish car or want an attention-grabbing zingy blue shade, keep reading to find the right blue for you.
1. Hyundai i30 N
Best baby blue car for speed
Used deals Limited stock
Hyundai has become one of the most prominent users of baby blue paint in recent years, thanks to the launch of its ‘N’ performance brand. The first model was the Hyundai i30 N, which is a powerful family hatchback designed to rival cars like the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Hyundai is an appealing alternative to the Golf as it is fast and fun, yet practical and comfortable enough to live with every day.
Hyundai offers an unlimited mileage, five-year warranty on all its models, which gives the i30 N a distinct advantage over cars like the Ford Focus RS, which is only covered for three years or 60,000 miles. Any other benefits? Absolutely, equipment levels are great as standard, with tech such as climate control, reversing camera and launch control all included. The latter helps the driver to accelerate as fast as possible from a standing start.
2. Kia Picanto
Best baby blue car for cheap insurance
Used deals from £6,995
Monthly finance from £126.98*
When it comes to running costs, the Kia Picanto promises to keep bills to a minimum. The only engines available are frugal petrol units, which help maximise the range from a tank of fuel. At the same time, the Picanto is quite a simple car, so any maintenance and repair bills should be small - especially compared to larger, more complicated cars. All Kias come with a 100,000-mile, seven-year warranty from new, so many unexpected repairs should be covered by this - even if you opt for a four- or five-year-old car.
The core models in the Picanto range are named '1', '2' and '3' - so it is easy to follow. Entry-level '1' models should be a one-way ticket to cheap insurance, as they sit in a low insurance group but are quite basic. These groupings are one of the variables companies consider when providing insurance quotes. If your budget allows, we’d recommend moving up to '2' specification, as this opens the door to equipment such as air-conditioning and a slightly better sound system.
3. BMW 3 Series
Best dark blue car for company car drivers
Used deals from £11,563
Monthly finance from £253.53*
BMW doesn’t offer the 3 Series in just one flavour of blue - there are plenty to choose from. There is Portimao Blue, Mediterranean Blue (which is darker), Tanzanite Blue (more turquoise) and Blue Ridge Mountain (which is a bluey-greeny-silver).
There is also a wide range of trims and engines to choose from. If you are expecting to do a mixture of in-town and out-of-town driving then either a 320d or 330e will be the best option. The former is a diesel and the latter a plug-in hybrid, which will need to be regularly charged if you want to maximise your fuel economy, by spending as much time as possible running on electric power and as little time as possible using the petrol engine.
Additionally, there are more practical ‘Touring’ versions, if you'd prefer a blue car with greater luggage space. These are classed as estates so they have a larger, more cube-shaped boot compared to the standard 3 Series saloon - handy if you have a dog that regularly comes in the car with you, or you often need to carry large loads.

4. Citroen Berlingo
Best dark blue car for families that need seven seats
Used deals Limited stock
While many drivers are turning to SUVs for practical cars, people carriers like the Citroen Berlingo XL blow all alternatives out of the water in terms of the amount of seven-seat practicality they offer for the money. If you only need five seats but still want plenty of luggage room, then the shorter Berlingo M is worth considering as it is still incredibly practical. In all models, the amount of space for the driver and passengers is vast. In fact, the rear seats have more room than some cars have in the front.
Part of what makes the Berlingo so impressive is the small touches available. We particularly like the opening boot door window (which is great for quickly loading or unloading small items) and the rear doors that slide open. Sliding doors mean there is no need to worry about passengers accidentally banging other cars when getting in and out. There are plenty of high-tech features, too, such as a head-up display, which is a little screen directly in front of the driver that beams driving information onto the windscreen.
5. Renault Zoe
Best light blue car for electric driving
Used deals from £6,500
Monthly finance from £262.71*
Ever since the electric Zoe was launched in 2013, this stylish small car has been leading the move towards affordable battery-powered cars. This is partly thanks to Renault seemingly constantly developing the Zoe - with a particularly sizeable update taking place in 2020. If you'd like a Zoe with the greatest possible range per charge and your budget will allow, we’d recommend one of the newer models as they are claimed to be able to travel over 200 miles from a full charge.
Older models came with official ranges of between 149 miles and 186 miles depending on the exact specification, but those with the smallest battery packs will likely manage 100 miles with typical driving. All versions of the Zoe are incredibly easy to drive thanks to their punchy electric motors and smooth automatic gearboxes. In town, this combination is particularly effective as there is no need to worry about stalling or having to change gear - the car does it all for you and practically in silence, too.
6. Audi Q3
Best light blue car for smaller families
Used deals from £15,699
Monthly finance from £267.51*
As much as we like to think that Audi named its ‘Turbo Blue’ after the lightning-fast Snail in the 2013 animated film ‘Turbo’, we somehow doubt it. Regardless, this is one of the brighter light blues available. Audi only paints certain models in Turbo Blue, including relatively high specification S line models. There are petrol and diesel engines to choose from, along with the option of a plug-in hybrid.
There is no denying that the Q3 is a cut above most SUVs thanks to its smart styling and classy interior. Audi’s ‘Virtual Cockpit’ is a particular highlight as it swaps traditional round dials with a large digital display. The screen can be used in a number of different configurations, including one which effectively makes it a large sat-nav screen - very helpful when trying to not get lost. Luxuries like these don’t come cheap, as the Audi is more expensive than a lot of alternatives when new, but then again it should hold its value well.

7. Mercedes A-Class
Best blue car for young professionals
Used deals from £9,995
Monthly finance from £234.00*
The Mercedes A-Class is an excellent treat to yourself as it is one of the very best upmarket hatchbacks. It especially suits young professionals due to its classy badge but based on the fact it was the second most popular new car in 2021, there are far more types of people than just young professionals driving them. Breaking the best features down, you get a brilliant interior, classy styling and a choice of efficient engines. There are rapid high-performance models, too, which are badged as A35 or A45 S.
It is arguably the interior that steals the most limelight, thanks to something Mercedes calls ‘MBUX’. At the core of MBUX are two screens that span most of the dashboard and show everything from vehicle speed to which radio station is playing. This system includes great features, such as voice control that is smart enough to understand commands such as ‘I feel cold’. Clever stuff. Just bear in mind that there are several different versions of the system in the A-Class - some of which have larger, clearer screens than others.
8. Peugeot 5008
Best blue car for seven seats
Used deals from £21,999
Monthly finance from £340.60*
As seven-seat SUVs go, the Peugeot 5008 is remarkably easy to live with. The interior is the star of the show, with plenty of good quality materials and a dashboard that curves around the driver. Although the 5008 is a large car, Peugeot fits it with a diddy steering wheel. It is a quirky feature of all modern Peugeots but can make the car feel more responsive, especially on twisty 60mph roads - with dials that you look at over the wheel. Definitely something to make sure you are happy with before signing on the dotted line.
There is a choice of petrol and diesel models with either a manual or automatic gearbox - and no option is a particularly weak link. If filling all seven seats plus the boot is going to be a regular occurrence, opting for either the 180hp petrol or 180hp diesel engine is a good idea as they have enough power to cope with a full load. There are no four-wheel-drive 5008 models, so if you need to go off-road something like a Land Rover Discovery Sport could be a better option for you.
