The Toyota Aygo ploughs its own very distinctive furrow in the competitive city car class. That might sound odd for a car that’s so closely related to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 under the skin, but the fact is that nothing looks remotely like the Aygo with its dramatic X-shaped grille and angular lines. It’s aimed primarily at younger drivers but anyone, young or old who wants to stand out should give it consideration.

Launched in 2014 but face lifted in 2018 to keep it fresh, the Aygo is powered by a small, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 72hp and comes with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automatic called x-shift that costs £700 more. With that in mind, don't expect any acceleration fireworks from the Aygo, it’s for town drivers who want a decent burst of speed to get rolling with light steering for threading through traffic and compact dimensions for easy parking.

The cheapest specification is available with three or five doors but the latter costs just £300 more, making it the obvious choice due to the extra practicality it offers. The other trims are five-door only. Options include Toyota’s Safety Sense pack of safety systems including automatic braking and lane departure warning. Costing £375 it’s available on all trims bar entry-level x and is standard on x-clusiv. Spending a little more initially could save you money further along the line, however, as this feature can reduce the cost of your insurance, since autonomous emergency braking systems are viewed favourably by insurers.

What is not optional is the Aygo’s impressive new car warranty, which lasts for five years - two years longer than that supplied with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. It’s a valuable benefit if you’re buying a brand new model and intending to hang onto it but also if you’re going for a used option, since a two-year-old model will still have three years’ cover left to run. BuyaCar has a good spread of Aygos ranging in age from 2014 versions to barely used nearly-new models - all for far less than new models.

Toyota Aygo x offers

The three-door version in this entry-level trim (it’s also available with five doors) ensures the Aygo ducks under the all-important £10,000 price point before any discounts. Go used, however, and you can get the an Aygo x for an even more palatable price.

Don't expect too much in the way of luxuries, but you will find electric front windows and a roster of safety kit including hill start assist, and tyre pressure warning plus a very useful rear seatbelt reminder warning. Smart LED daytime running lights feature, too.

Toyota Aygo x-play offers

If x trim is for fleets and courtesy car drivers that want the lowest possible cost, x-play is the first of the trims aimed squarely at regular customers. Air-conditioning, a touchscreen media system with a digital radio and a reversing camera, smart body-coloured door mirrors, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and a leather-covered steering wheel with audio controls – they’re all here.

Options include Safety Sense and a sat-nav, meaning that x-play models make much more sense whether it's your only car, or your family needs a compact, cheap-to-run second car. It costs £1,380 more than x trim but you’ll be glad you chose it, and the difference will be far smaller with used models. You get five doors as standard, too.

Toyota Aygo x-trend offers

Mid-range x-play trim is well equipped, but even so, you have to pay another £1,335 for x-trend trim to get something as commonplace as smartphone integration. Along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, this version also features alloy wheels, coloured sills and matching wing mirrors, rear privacy glass and automatic air-conditioning.

Only this trim offers the option of the electrically retractable roof, too, making it the one to go for if you're after maximum style or like the idea of sliding the roof back for lots of fresh air when the sun's shining.

Toyota Aygo x-clusiv offers

This is the top-spec Aygo whose £1,185 price jump over x-trend trim brings Safety Sense as standard, contrasting roof and body colours, special alloy wheels and part-leather trim. Again, if you're shopping for a used model, the extra cost over less well-equipped models should be much smaller than that.

It’s the most luxurious version but it’s still cheaper than the most luxurious Peugeot 108 in Collection trim and only around £500 more expensive than the most luxurious Citroen C1 Flair, that has less equipment. That means that it's a great choice if you want the most kit in your small car for a low price, with second-hand models offering even greater value.
