Best used cars in stock

1. Mercedes A-Class

In stock Mercedes A180d AMG Line
Used deals from £20,950
Monthly finance from £333*

Want an expensive-looking A-Class without the steep fuel bills? The A180d is the most economical version of what is a very popular and upmarket hatchback. We prefer models equipped with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which should prove particularly relaxing to drive.

Making this A-Class more desirable, it will arrive on your doorstep decked out in AMG Line trim, which includes a pair of screens - digital displays for both the media system and the dials - plus bright LED headlights, a reversing camera and two-zone climate control.

For a car that would have cost more than £30,000 new, there are some pretty considerable savings to be had here.

2. Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer

In stock Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer 1.2 PureTech 130
Used deals from £15,498
Monthly finance from £0*

If you need something more sensible and spacious, how about the Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer? It's almost identical to the Grand C4 Picasso it replaced in 2018 but is available with more refined and efficient engines.

If you want a model renowned for its efficiency, go for a diesel version which should be able to return 50mpg without too much effort. The 1.2-litre petrol engines are a great fit for drivers who spend most of their time around town, and are impressively economical even in such a large car.

3. Mitsubishi Outlander

In stock Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 PHEV
Used deals from £17,500
Monthly finance from £0*

Perhaps you need something a little more rugged? SUVs like the Outlander normally fetch a much higher price - since tough-looking crossovers are hugely popular right now - yet they are often less capable of tackling serious off-road terrain than you think. This 4x4 definitely isn't though, so you’ll be getting an awful lot of car for your money with this one.

The 2.2-litre diesel version will prove more capable off-road, however with most drivers spending their time around town it's hard not to recommend the plug-in hybrid version which is capable of over 100mpg if you charge it regularly. Fail to do so and you could see figures plummet to 30mpg.

4. BMW 5 Series

In stock BMW 520d M Sport xDrive
Used deals from £19,800
Monthly finance from £0*

If you're after something upmarket, comfortable and equally at home on country roads or the motorway, this BMW 520d covers all the bases - complete with four-wheel drive, so it shouldn't leave you stuck when the snow falls. Another very economical version of a popular car - with a powerful but frugal diesel engine under the bonnet - this particular model comes in desirable M Sport trim with 'xDrive' four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Although this may be the least powerful engine in the 5 Series range, the 520d remains hugely popular among consumers thanks to its excellent fuel economy – and as 0-62mph takes just 7.5 seconds it’s hardly slow either. The xDrive system will reduce fuel economy slightly as it powers all four wheels, but an official figure of 68mpg is still pretty impressive.

5. Audi A6 Saloon

In stock Audi A6 2.0 40 TDI S Line S tronic
Used deals from £25,984
Monthly finance from £0*

The latest Audi A6 Saloon has not been on the market for that long, so to find one at this kind of price with such low mileage is not easily done. There's a handful on BuyaCar, but only this one is ready to be delivered to your door today.

It’s another automatic diesel and one that should prove just as relaxing and economical to drive as the BMW above. Not to mention you’ll be getting a very upmarket car with a lot of very upmarket tech for a not-so-upmarket price.

6. Audi A3 Cabriolet

In stock Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.5 TFSI S line
Used deals Limited stock

Winter is a great time to get a good deal on a convertible, as many other drivers are shopping for SUVs and few looking for stylish cabriolets. The Audi A3 Cabriolet takes the good bits from the standard A3 hatchback and makes it all more stylish by giving it a soft top.

Don't think this is just a car for summer, though. Unlike older convertibles, the A3 is quiet and cosy on the move - you really don't have to worry about getting cold in the winter months, and it's just as comfortable as the ordinary hatchback it's based upon.

The soft-top is well insulated and can be folded down or raised at speeds of up to 31mph, so even if you are caught in the rain - or even the snow, for that matter - you’ll have things under control.

7. Lexus CT

In stock Lexus CT 200h Premier CVT
Used deals from £10,800
Monthly finance from £0*

Want a relatively compact, strong value hatchback, but with the addition of hybrid power for silent town cruising? Look no further than the Lexus CT. It may have been on the market for a while now, so the interior isn't the most high-tech, but the hybrid petrol-electric tech under the bonnet is. Not only is the CT cheap to run, with the prospect of very low petrol bills around town, but this one is cheap to buy in the first place, too.

More than just offering a very efficient hybrid engine, the CT is backed up by Lexus’ impeccable reliability record. It’s by no means the most exciting car on this list, but it will bring you stress-free motoring.

8. Mini Electric

In stock Mini Electric
Used deals Limited stock

After an electric car that doesn't cost the earth to buy? The electric version of the Mini delivers the typical 'go kart' feeling from behind the wheel, while all models are well equipped with things like LED headlights, cruise control, a large touchscreen media display with Apple CarPlay, and a digital dashboard.

It uses a relatively small 32.6kWh battery pack to deliver approximately 140 miles of electric motoring on one charge, but while other manufacturers like Mercedes and Jaguar use battery packs as large as 90kWh or more, the Mini remains an extremely economical electric car.
