Thinking of splashing out on a Mini? We've got the latest used models available on BuyaCar with some great value PCP finance deals

Compared with most other hatchbacks, the Mini looks and feels special, firstly thanks to its heritage, agile handling, nippy performance, cute styling and characterful interior. The Mini Hatchback is also more affordable than you might think, with prices for used examples of the latest versions starting at less than £10,000 on BuyaCar.

Despite all the changes that came with the 2018 update, the four core models remain: Mini One, Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S and Mini John Cooper Works (JCW), but each of these models (apart from the JCW version) are available in a choice of three styles called Classic (the default style), Sport and Exclusive. In combination with the increase in standard specification, Sport and Exclusive styles replace the popular trim packs such as the Chili and Sport packs from previous versions.

As an example of how they compare, Exclusive (special 17-inch alloys, leather sports seats and steering wheel, and so-called 'chrome line' detailing inside and out) is closest to the old Chilli pack of 2016 that featured LED headlights but not the LED rear lights that are now standard on all Minis. On the other hand, the 2018 Sport trim (JCW steering wheel, sports seats, special 17-inch alloys, aerodynamic kit, sill finishers) is very like the previous Sport pack launched in 2015.

Under the bonnet, the latest versions on sale since the 2018 update are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Before that, there was a less efficient 1.2-litre petrol engine, while the option for a diesel engine was removed entirely as of 2019.

Options to look out for...

Of course, a Mini wouldn't be a Mini without a plethora of customisation options. Many of them are available individually but since 2018 have been bundled into options packs called navigation, comfort and driving assistant. In addition, navigation and comfort are available in enhanced ‘plus’ versions.

The navigation pack features sat-nav, obviously, but also a suite of connected services (the enhanced navigation pack plus has a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen media display and Wi-Fi connection). The driver assistance pack has traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking, and the comfort pack, automatic air-conditioning, rear parking sensors and heated front seats. Generally speaking, these latest packs replace the old options packs launched in 2016 and which included the 'Tech' pack and 'You' pack.

Whichever period of Mini you’re interested in – pre- or post-2018 – it’s worth checking to see if these options are fitted because they might not be immediately obvious.

2021 Mini Hatchback PCP offers

Mini One PCP offers

The One remains the entry point to Mini ownership and as such, is offered in low-cost Classic style only. However, the revisions of January 2018 mean it’s now better equipped and more attractive.

Inside, all versions have a multi-function steering wheel and a 6.5-inch touchscreen media system. The adoption of 3D printing means there are many more possibilities for personalisation, too. It also features LED lights front and rear, automatic windscreen wipers, a digital radio and the Mini Excitement pack that includes LED mood lighting.

Whether it was registered in 2013 when the current version was launched, or since 2018 when the range was updated, all Minis have electric mirrors, air-conditioning, an onboard computer and Bluetooth.

It also comes with a new 1.5-litre petrol engine which, although no more powerful than the old 1.2 that was dropped at the end of 2017, does at least satisfy the latest WLTP emissions rules. It’s available with a six-speed manual gearbox. Alternatively, if much of your driving is around town, consider the optional seven-speed automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, available with all engines. It was launched in 2017 and is more efficient and responsive than the old six-gear unit.

Mini Cooper PCP offers

As the most popular version in the Mini range, the Cooper keeps the more powerful 1.5-litre engine inherited from pre-2018 models. It is available in Classic style but, unlike the Mini One, in Sport and Exclusive styles, too.

These last two cost the same as each other meaning you have only to decide between the luxury of Exclusive or the aggressive John Cooper Works-look provided by Sport.

Mini Cooper S PCP offers

This speedy hatchback keeps its more powerful 2.0-litre engine but like the Cooper loses its old optional Chili and Sports packs in favour of the new range of Classic, Sport and Exclusive styles.

Again, Classic is the default style with the remaining two coming at the same higher price. It’s worth noting that in Sport style, the Cooper S is only around £3,300 cheaper new than the John Cooper Works version, the most powerful Mini. On the used market that price gap will be narrowed further still as the cars drop in value.

John Cooper Works PCP offers

As the most focused Mini in the range, this most powerful 2.0-litre version is only available with three doors. It doesn’t come with a choice of style packs but since it’s the inspiration for the Sport pack, it doesn't have to.

When comparing used models registered from 2018, it’s worth checking whether, as with the other versions we’ve covered, the first owner personalised their car or added one or more of the navigation, comfort and driving assistant options packs. Expect to pay more for cars stuffed with many expensive options. Remember, though, that these will also be worth more when you come to sell or at the end of the finance contract, meaning that they may cost less per month than you might expect with PCP finance
