BMW has a reputation for making fun-to-drive cars, and the 1 Series is no different. BMW’s compact hatchback first arrived in 2004 and, uniquely for a family hatchback, sent power to the rear wheels, making it feel more sporty than other models like the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and Ford Focus that sent power to the front wheels.

Driving enthusiasts loved the 1 Series for its agile handling and responsive steering - no matter how hard you accelerate, the front wheels won't spin nor will the steering wheel tug in your hands as with other hatchbacks.

To the dismay of many, though, the latest 2019 1 Series changed the recipe to become front-wheel drive in a move to maximise space for rear passengers. The most powerful version does feature all-wheel drive, so it still offers strong traction when accelerating. Thankfully, the car retains the 1 Series' trademark fine roadholding and a comfortable ride, meaning it's still one of the most satisfying-to-drive hatchbacks.

Despite being no bigger than the previous 1 Series has much more space for passengers thanks to a shorter bonnet and fewer mechanical bits under the rear seats - as power is no longer sent to the rear wheels. People riding in the back are the biggest beneficiaries, as most of the extra space is allocated to rear legroom.

Rear passeners over six feet tall might still find headroom a little tight though, as the 1 Series has quite a sporty profile with a roofline that dips noticeably towards the hatchback. Meanwhile, the boot compares favourably with its rivals too, and matches the 380-litre capacity of the Volkswagen Golf. The 1 Series now only comes as a five-door these days like most hatchbacks.

Up front, the cabin feels every bit as upmarket as the previous 1 Series, with a driver-centric dashboard angled towards the person behind the wheel and clearly laid-out instruments and controls. There’s an impressive 8.8-inch media system for music, sat-nav, air-conditioning and other vehicle controls as standard too.

Engines range from economical three-cylinder motors shared with Mini models (Mini is owned by BMW), to larger petrol and diesel engines and the range-topping 306hp M135i, which features four-wheel drive for containing the significant amount of power on tap, which means this version offers the performance to challenge many sports cars.

The 2019-on BMW 1 Series is offered in a familiar range of trim levels including SE, Sport, M Sport and the range-topping M135i. Scroll down to see the best used BMW 1 Series deals available now, and to find out just how much you could get for your monthly finance budget with PCP finance.

Inside things are a notch sportier too, thanks to leather upholstery, a black roof lining and luxury features such as heated sports seats.
