Suzuki Across plug-in hybrid SUV with 47-mile electric range

Want a plug-in hybrid SUV with a long electric range? The Across can cover up to 47 miles on electricity and is related to the Toyota RAV4

Spend most of your time in the car driving around town and want a low-emission hybrid model to cut your fuel bills? The new Suzuki Across could be for you, as it offers up to 47 miles of electric range - more than most plug-in hybrids, which are typically only capable of up to 30 miles of zero-emission range when fully charged.

Based upon the Toyota RAV4 - itself available with hybrid power, albeit one that can't be plugged into the mains - the Across features a 2.5-litre petrol engine plus an electric motor and larger battery pack. This means that the Across offers the prospect of far greater real-world electric range - provided you regularly charge the batteries.

Fail to do that and the car will resort back to burning petrol, but having to carry the extra weight of the larger battery pack, potentially making it less efficient than the RAV4 hybrid. Suzuki is presenting the Across as a tough and sporty SUV with a high driving position and all-wheel drive. The first models will be available in autumn 2020.
Standard equipment for the new Across should include LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels and a nine-inch touchscreen media system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink connectivity for connecting different phones to the car. Suzuki claims that the Across should have an upmarket feel, prioritising comfort and using many soft-touch materials around the cabin.

2020 Suzuki Across: plug-in hybrid technology

Thanks to its plug-in hybrid technology, the Across is capable of travelling up to 47 miles on electricity alone. This is a substantial amount for a hybrid and nearly half that of many early electric cars. Keep the car charged up and mainly drive around town, therefore, and you should be able to complete a majority of your driving on electricity alone. This is good for the environment through reduced emissions from burning petrol and should save you money, too compared with not bothering to charge the car.

The large battery pack also means that the Across has an official CO2 emissions figure of 22g/km. This makes it a good option for company car drivers, as benefit-in-kind tax is based upon a car's emissions and its price, so the lower the emissions, the less tax you have to pay. With that 47-mile range, too, it means that those who primarily do short urban journeys should never need to fill up the petrol tank, provided the plug it in every night.

Performance figures are yet to be confirmed, but with the RAV4 hybrid accelerating from a standstill to 62mph in a reasonably brisk 8.4 seconds, expect the heavier and less powerful Across to be notably slower than this. The Across produces 180hp in total from its 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor pairing but where it beats the RAV4 is in the capacity of its battery - rather than having a 6.5Ah battery the Across has a 50.9Ah unit, with notably greater range than the RAV4 offers.

The Across's hybrid system offers four drive modes - a default 'EV' mode, 'Auto EV/HV' mode, 'HV' mode and battery charger mode. EV - 'electric vehicle' - mode drives purely on electric power - even under full acceleration - provided there's sufficient battery charge. In Auto EV/HV (electric vehicle/hybrid vehicle) mode and HV mode, the car automatically switches between electric and hybrid power - with the petrol engine kicking in when full acceleration is called for - depending upon how much battery charge is available.

Battery charger mode, meanwhile, uses the petrol engine to charge up the batteries so that you can use electric power at a later stage. Be aware that in doing this the car is likely to burn more petrol than normal. Consequently, manually charging up the car by plugging in is the more environmentally friendly way to keep the batteries topped up.

2020 Suzuki Across: all-wheel drive system

The Suzuki Across includes an all-wheel drive system that can vary power between the front and rear wheels, to cut fuel economy when cruising and to offer maximum grip when driving across slippery terrain.

The hybrid system includes front and rear electric motors that can send power to all four wheels. Together with the petrol engine, the Across can send everything from all of the power to the front wheels to 20% to the front wheels and 80% to the rear ones.

The Across also offers a 'Trail Mode' to make the most of the all-wheel drive system's grip when dealing with particularly slippery surfaces. This uses the brakes and metes out power to the wheels with the best level of grip to keep you moving on low-grip surfaces.

2020 Suzuki Across: dimensions and boot space

Unlike some SUVs of this size, which may offer a third row of seats for children or small adults, the Across is a five-seater, with no option for seven seats. Suzuki claims that instead the car offers maximum comfort for those in the front two rows of seats plus a reasonably large boot that measures 490 litres, extending to 1,604 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Helping to make the boot more practical is an outlet and accessory socket for charging electrical devices, while there are additional cubby holes dotted around the cabin including storage trays for driver and front passenger, a centre tray and centre console storage box.

The Across measures in at 4,635mm long and 1,855mm wide. Unsurprisingly this is very similar to the Toyota RAV4, making the Across reasonably large for a five-seater SUV. More surprisingly, the Across is particularly heavy at nearly 1,940kg, which is partly down to the large - and heavy - battery pack.
