The three-door Vauxhall Corsa offers incredible value for money as a second-hand purchase. Here are some of the best models

The Vauxhall Corsa is one of the most popular small cars in the UK. You may have passed your driving test in one, you’ve probably driven one on a holiday somewhere and, if not, you’ll almost certainly know someone who has one.

Rivals include the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris, but few superminis offer the same compelling blend of price and equipment. Choose the right three-door Vauxhall Corsa and you’ll be treated to big car spec at a small car price.

The current Corsa is five-door only, so if you’re after a three-door Vauxhall Corsa, you’ll need to go for the model on sale from 2014 until 2019. Don’t worry, because the old model sold in big numbers, so there’s no shortage of used examples on BuyaCar.

Thanks to its curvier shape, the three-door Vauxhall Corsa looks more stylish than the five-door, but you still get the same 285-litre boot, which is average for a supermini of this size.

Vauxhall axed the 1.3-litre CDTi diesel engine in 2018 due to low demand, but you should be able to find a few on BuyaCar. This is still one of the most economical cars you can get, being able to realistically achieve between 60mpg and 70mpg. If you cover a lot of motorway miles and want a small but frugal car, the 1.3 CDTi makes a lot of sense.

For everyone else, the petrol engines are recommended. The standard 1.4-litre is offered with two different outputs: 75hp and 90hp. The less powerful version is fine for short trips into town, but the more powerful unit delivers the better blend of performance and fuel economy.

There are also two turbocharged versions producing 100hp and 150hp. The latter feels particularly rapid and is the most nippy Corsa - barring the VXR high-performance model - being the only other Corsa able to accelerate from 0-62mph in less than 10 seconds. Don’t rule out the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which offers diesel-like fuel economy and the performance of a typical 1.6-litre engine.

If performance is your thing, take a look at the Vauxhall Corsa VXR. This hot hatchback is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and is a serious rival to the Ford Fiesta ST. A 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds and top speed of 143mph make it one of the fastest small cars you can get.

Best three-door Vauxhall Corsa models

Before we start, it’s worth mentioning the list of equipment that’s standard across the range. Highlights include a heated windscreen, cruise control, electric front windows, remote central locking, six speakers, six airbags, Isofix child seat mountings, tyre pressure monitoring and daytime running lights.

Vauxhall Corsa Energy

We’re starting with the Energy trim because it’s the most popular model on BuyaCar. It’s not hard to see why; in addition to everything above, you get a seven-inch touchscreen media system, digital radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB connection, air-conditioning, heated steering wheel and heated seats.

On the outside, you’ll find 16-inch alloy wheels, electric and heated door mirrors, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front fog lights and LED daytime running lights. The price to equipment ratio is so good, why waste your, ahem, Energy searching for an alternative three-door Vauxhall Corsa?

Vauxhall Corsa Sting

The Sting and Sting R models are popular with young drivers, not least because you get twin white stripes on the bonnet, roof and tailgate. Further cosmetic upgrades include body-coloured door handles and white door mirror housings and front grille bar. The Sting also rides on 16-inch white alloy wheels and features a leather-covered steering wheel, CD/MP3 audio system and six speakers.

Upgrading to the Sting R adds 16-inch black alloy wheels, black stripes and door mirror housings, VX-Line leather-covered steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever, chrome-effect exhaust pipe and sports suspension.

Vauxhall Corsa Griffin

Thanks to a price tag of around £11,500, the three-door Vauxhall Corsa Griffin was an incredibly popular new car. This means there’s no shortage of used versions to choose from; the Griffin is actually the second most popular Corsa trim on BuyaCar, as a result.

Highlights include a seven-inch touchscreen media system with European sat-nav, digital radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, air-conditioning, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, sports-style heated front seats, leather-covered steering wheel and Griffin-branded front and rear floor mats.

On the outside, the Griffin features a black finish for the roof, door mirrors and front grille, automatic lights and wipers, 16-inch black alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, front fog lights and electric/heated door mirrors.

Vauxhall Corsa Sport

When you consider the Sport trim cost nearly £4,000 more than the Griffin when new, you can understand why so many bought the latter. You actually get less equipment although the Corsa Sport still offers good value for money.

Highlights include the same audio system you’ll find on the Griffin, albeit without sat-nav, plus air-conditioning, a leather-covered steering wheel, sports-style front seats, alloy-effect sports pedals, electric and heated door mirrors, tinted rear windows and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Vauxhall Corsa Limited Edition

This is another popular model, not least because it comes with a long list of standard equipment. The exterior makeover extends to 17-inch black alloy wheels and body-coloured front lower spoiler, side sills, rear roof spoiler and rear lower skirt. There’s also a chrome-effect tailpipe, black roof and door housings, black front grille, electric and heated door mirrors, plus sports suspension.

Inside, the Limited Edition features sports-style front seats, air-conditioning, an audio system with a digital radio, VX-Line leather-covered flat-bottomed steering wheel, plus VX-Line leather-covered gear knob and handbrake cover.

Vauxhall Corsa SRi

Vauxhall Corsas in sporty SRi trim have been around for decades. With this generation of Corsa, you get 16-inch black alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, air-conditioning, front fog lights with chrome surround, sports-style front seats, leather-covered steering wheel and audio system with a digital radio.

Additional features include electric and heated door mirrors, automatic headlights and wipers, and body-coloured exterior door handles. Look out for SRi Nav, SRi VX-Line and SRi VX-Line Nav Black models, as these offer even more equipment for only a modest increase in price.

Vauxhall Corsa GSi

Thanks to a high price tag of £19,000 when new, few people bought the Vauxhall Corsa GSi, so you won’t find many on the used car market. Have some patience, though, because this is a supermini worth waiting for, not least because it’s powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine producing a reasonably substantial 150hp.

Vauxhall threw everything except the kitchen sink at the GSi, so you’ll want for nothing in terms of equipment. It also gets a full GSi makeover, including front lower spoiler, side sills, rear skirt and rear roof spoiler. The carbon-effect door mirrors and front grille bar look great, while the combination of sports suspension and 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels complete the makeover.

The Corsa VXR also features a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, unique VXR instrument panel, sports pedals, alloy-effect door sill covers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital radio, air-conditioning and cruise control.
