Best used cars for under £100 per month

Pay a pittance for motoring with a car that costs less than £100 per month on finance

You can have any car that you like for £100 a month - as long as you put down a big enough deposit.

Most of the deals on new cars for £100 per month rely on enormous initial payments, running into thousands of pounds. Even the cheapest new cars, such as the Dacia Sandero, Suzuki Celerio and Nissan Micra typically require a deposit of around £2,000 to £3,000 to bring monthly payments below three figures.

That’s why the smart money is on a used car. Below are the best used cars to buy for £100 per month, based on putting down a ten per cent deposit on a representative 48 month PCP finance agreement.

If you do have a large deposit and wanted to minimise your monthly payment on a brand new vehicle, then you can configure a car and request a finance quote.

Seat Ibiza

Latest Seat Ibiza deals from £5,480
Finance from £99 per month

The design might be more than a decade old, but the previous-generation Seat Ibiza still looks fresh-faced, particularly since the new Seat Ibiza, which was launched in 2017, has a similar appearance.

Space is a bit restricted in the back, although the 300-litre boot compares well to other small cars. An unsettled ride on bumpy roads is the price you pay for the Ibiza’s nimbleness in corners, which makes it more fun to drive than most other cars in this price bracket. Like most others in this list, the equipment level of cars costing under £100 a month is basic, but you should be able to find one with air conditioning.

Vauxhall Corsa

Latest Vauxhall Corsa deals from £4,000
Finance from £60 per month

Vauxhall’s underrated Corsa is a bargain at this price, as you can get a 2015 model with the current design for under £100 per month. There are plenty of entry-level Sting models to choose from, which are safe and cheap to insure but basic (Bluetooth is included but not all have air conditioning).

Older and better-specified cars are also available. These are previous-generation Corsas with a less sophisticated interior and a bouncier ride over potholed roads.

Peugeot 208

Latest Peugeot 208 deals from £5,295
Finance from £94 per month

You’d be pushed to identify many differences between a used Peugeot 208 for under £100 per month and the cars that are being sold brand new because the car has barely changed in five years.

Petrol-powered Active cars are within budget, bringing a touchscreen with digital radio and Bluetooth. You may also find some diesel-powered Allure cars with automatic headlights and wipers as well as climate control and sports seats, which feel far more expensive than £100 per month.

Volkswagen up!

Latest VW up! deals from £4,795
Finance from £75 per month

It might be cheap but Volkswagen has endowed the up! with enough quality and solidity that it feels as well screwed together as a Polo or Golf.

Light steering makes it easy to manoeuvre round town, where even the least-powerful model is relatively nippy. You’re in luck if you find a Move up! model, which has air conditioning and a split rear seat, which aren’t included on Take up! trim.

Ford Fiesta

Latest Ford Fiesta deals from £5,694
Finance from £89 per month

There’s no shortage of Ford Fiestas to buy but surprisingly few that are under £100 per month. That’s mainly because demand for these excellent small cars is strong, even though a new Ford Fiesta was launched in 2017.

Most cars within budget are powered by a 1.25-litre petrol engine, which is perfectly capable of motorway speeds but does need revving to accelerate at a reasonable pace.

Five door cars, with two front and two rear doors are the most practical if you regularly carry rear passengers, and Zetec-specification cars come with air conditioning, alloy wheels and split-fold rear seats as standard.
