Looking for a cheap and dependable 4x4 that will shrug off bad weather and harsh countryside? If you live in some of the UK's more rural spots, chances are ownership of a 4x4 is probably one of your more pressing priorities, and you need a car that's going to face up to the challenge.

New cars with four-wheel drive can often be rather pricey, but if you're looking for a cheap 4x4, we're pleased to say that you'll be well catered for on the used car market, with hundreds of four-wheel drive options available to you on BuyaCar from less than £15,000, or monthly payments of less than £150 per month.

There are plenty of cheap options available to you in a range of sizes, from the rather enormous Mitsubishi Outlander to the diminutive Suzuki Jimny, but most importantly they are all perfectly capable of tackling the boggy stuff. There's even a great selection of small 4x4s if you need the utility without the size.

We've got them all right here on BuyaCar, so read on to find out more about the best cheap 4x4s you can buy right here on BuyaCar.

Best cheap 4x4s

1. Dacia Duster

Best cheap 4x4 for value

Our pick Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi 110 Laureate 4x4 Used deals from £7,586
Monthly finance from £188*

If you think of the cheapest cars around, you'll be thinking about anything with a Dacia badge. But just because they're cheap doesn't make them bad cars, the Dacia Duster has proven itself hugely capable over its decade or so on sale in the UK.

Entry-level models are especially basic, with some Dusters forgoing air-conditioning and a radio setup for the ultimate low price tag. Fortunately, top-spec Laureate and Prestige models are available used for less than £10,000, with things like a reversing camera.

2. Skoda Yeti

Best cheap 4x4 for simplicity

Our pick Skoda Yeti Outdoor 2.0 TDI SE L 4x4
Used deals from £12,495
Monthly finance from £225*

The Skoda Yeti was hugely popular during its time and although it was discontinued and replaced by the similarly sized Skoda Karoq in 2018, it has retained its desirability on the used car market.

With practicality in spades and four-wheel drive, the Yeti ticked all the right boxes for families all over the UK. The 2.0-litre diesel offers plenty of punch when you need it and there's a long list of equipment including dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth.

3. Volkswagen Tiguan

Best cheap 4x4 for Golf-like interiors

Our pick Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI BMT Match DSG 4MOTION
Used deals from £11,889
Monthly finance from £226*

What you're getting here is an awful lot of car at a very reasonable price. Although it's a little more expensive than the Duster and the Yeti, what you're getting is worth the additional cost and more. A 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, digital radio and dual-zone climate control are the tip of the iceberg.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine was by no means the fastest around, but it continues to offer excellent fuel economy, which means it'll be cheaper to run too. This version was replaced in 2016, so you'll be getting your hands on a car at the peak of its development cycle.

4. Jeep Cherokee

Best cheap 4x4 for American styling

Our pick Jeep Cherokee 2.2 Multijet Limited
Used deals Limited stock

It might not look it from the outside, but on the inside the Jeep Cherokee is beginning to feel a little dated compared to many of its more modern rivals. But that doesn't mean it isn't still a hugely capable off-roader. It's a Jeep, so its off-road credentials are without question, and you'll be getting a very handy 4x4 for around £15,000.

Despite being on sale for several years, the Cherokee still features tech like an 8.4-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera and dual-zone climate control.

5. Fiat Panda 4x4

Best cheap 4x4 for cute looks

Our pick Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir 4x4
Used deals Limited stock

Here is a very handy bargain. The Fiat Panda 4x4 does a lot of things a car twice its size (and price) can't do, and for less than £12,000 you can get a virtually brand-new model.

Powered by Fiat's fast and economical 0.9-litre 'TwinAir' turbocharged petrol engine, the Panda 4x4 is the best Panda you can buy, and as it's pretty much a new car, you're getting all the latest tech Fiat offer with it as well. Say no to this at your peril.

6. Suzuki Jimny

Best cheap 4x4 for reliving your summer holiday

Our pick Suzuki Jimny 1.5 SZ4 ALLGRIP
Used deals from £15,995
Monthly finance from £310*

The last generation Suzuki Jimny enjoyed a 20-year production run, changing very little along the way. Of course, the interior received its fair share of updates, and it certainly featured more up-to-date technology in 2018 than it did in 1998.

In terms of character, the Jimny has it in spades, but it's clear this car is designed to tackle the roughest and most rugged terrain rather than cruise serenely along 100 miles of motorway. So bear that in mind if you're considering the £15,000 price tag, but for a late model with not many miles it's pretty hard to go wrong.

7. Vauxhall Mokka X

Best cheap 4x4 for families

Our pick Vauxhall Mokka 1.6 CDTi Elite Nav 4WD
Used deals from £10,495
Monthly finance from £206*

The Vauxhall Mokka X is unlikely to excite in the way a Jimny or a Panda 4x4 might, but it does deliver that all-important four-wheel drive at a very affordable price.

The best options will carry the 1.6-litre diesel engine, which packs a fair punch and is crucial for effective off-roading. Those putting out 136hp aren't overly slow either, so it will double up as a useful and practical car with plenty of tech for day-to-day journeys.

8. Nissan Qashqai

Best cheap 4x4 for reliability

Our pick Nissan Qashqai 1.6 dCi Tekna 4WD
Used deals from £12,490
Monthly finance from £230*

The Nissan Qashqai is probably the most useful family car on this list, but it is also available with four-wheel drive with a pair of diesel engines (1.6 and 1.7 litres), or a rather nippy 1.3-litre petrol.

Because of its rather soft and spongy disposition, the Qashqai is definitely not the most capable off-roader on this list, but if you do find yourself needing to haul your family through a particularly muddy piece of road, it will be more than up for the task. Stress-free motoring at its finest.
