The plug-in hybrid Range Rover - also known as the Range Rover P400e - is a luxury SUV with the fuel economy of a Toyota Prius. Launched in 2018, it arrived as Land Rover started its shift towards electrification; this was the first Range Rover to feature a plug-in hybrid petrol-electric setup.

It takes its name from the power produced by the combination of a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, yet it delivers the kind of fuel economy you’d associate with something much smaller and less expensive than a Range Rover - provided you charge it regularly. Recharge the car overnight and you could achieve the official figure of around 80mpg, especially if you spend most of your time in the city.

It gets better, because CO2 emissions of between 70g/km and 75g/km deliver road tax (VED) benefits as well as making the plug-in hybrid Range Rover a seriously attractive proposition for company car drivers.

The 13kWh battery can be fully charged in seven hours and 30 minutes using the home charging cable supplied, but this drops to just two hours and 30 minutes when using a dedicated wallbox or a suitable public charging point. With a full battery, you can expect up to 31 miles of range, although anything up to 25 miles is more realistic.

Because the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant arrived as part of the 2018 model update, which included a subtle styling makeover to bring it in line with the sleek Range Rover Velar, you’ll be treated to the ultimate Range Rover experience. It’s the little details that make a difference, such as the revised grille, which includes a hidden placement for the charging socket.

Some cars will come with a new four-LED headlight system, which includes an adaptive 'Pixel-Laser High Beam' option to project light up to 500 metres ahead of the car. Inside, the Range Rover PHEV gets Land Rover’s latest media system. Called Touch Pro Duo, it features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens, along with a 12-inch interactive digital instrument panel.

You even get wider and deeper front seats with 24-way electric adjustment, so you’ll be sitting comfortably as you waft silently through the city on electric power. This greenest of Range Rovers remains a class act when you venture off-road. There are seven 'Terrain Response' driving modes: Comfort, Dynamic, Eco, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl. The wading depth is 900mm, which is as high as any road car can handle - so water and electricity do mix!

With a starting price of £79,595 when the plug-in hybrid Range Rover was new in 2018, you may have thought this luxury SUV was out of reach, but read on to discover more about the latest deals on second-hand versions of the Vogue, Vogue SE, Westminster, Autobiography and SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase trim levels.

Range Rover PHEV Vogue

All plug-in hybrid Range Rover models are powered by the same combination of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. It might be the most efficient setup in the lineup, but it can still hit 62mph in just 6.3 seconds, which is faster than the 3.0-litre diesel D300.

Even the entry-level Vogue trim boasts an enviable list of standard equipment. Highlights include 20-inch alloy wheels, a heated windscreen, auto-dimming door mirrors, matrix LED headlights, perforated Windsor leather seats with heating and 20-way electric adjustment, a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, electric tailgate, keyless entry, Meridian sound system and digital TV.

The Vogue also comes with the ‘basic’ Terrain Response system, which adapts the engine, gearbox, differentials and chassis systems to match the terrain. The air suspension provides a choice of ride heights, from lower settings for easy access to extreme off-road mode for added ground clearance.

Vogue SE features everything you’ll find on the Vogue plus more comfort and equipment. It rides on a set of 21-inch alloy wheels, while the exterior is further enhanced by a set of 'Atlas' door handle surrounds.

Inside, the Vogue SE boasts perforated semi-aniline leather seats with 20-way electric adjustment, heating and cooling functions. Even the rear seats are heated and cooled, so your passengers won’t feel left out of the luxury experience.

Further upgrades include configurable ambient interior lighting, soft door close, Meridian surround system system, blind spot monitor, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, rear traffic monitor and 360-degree parking aid.

The Vogue SE also gets the Terrain Response 2 system, which takes the guesswork out of off-roading by automatically adjusting the driving mode to match the terrain. You can still manually override the system, should you wish.

Inside, the Westminster features grand black veneers, suede-cloth headlining, a sliding panoramic sunroof, soft-close doors and a 19-speaker Meridian surround sound system. Upgrading to the Westminster Black adds a black exterior pack and a choice of three alloy wheel designs, including a 21-inch split-spoke design.

Range Rover PHEV Autobiography

The Autobiography is the most lavish and, when new, most expensive trim level, so it might surprise you to discover that it’s the most popular model BuyaCar. Because it loses a large chunk of its value in the first year, you can drive away in this most luxurious of luxury SUVs for a significantly lower price than that paid by those buying one new.

Brace yourself, because the list of equipment is as lengthy as it is impressive. In addition to the standard features, you get 21-inch alloy wheels, Atlas exterior accents, a sliding panoramic sunroof, Pixel LED headlights and front fog lights.

On the inside, the leather seats feature 24-way electric adjustment, heating, cooling and massage functions. The Executive Class rear seats feature an electrically deployable centre console with storage to create a luxury four-seat environment. The so-called Extreme Passenger Seat Away will even adjust the front passenger seat to maximise the rear passenger’s space and visibility.

Elsewhere, you’ll find premium carpet mats, satin straight walnut veneer, illuminated treadplates, adaptive cruise control, solar windscreen, electric rear side window blinds, CD/DVD player and 10-inch entertainment screens for the rear seat passengers.

Range Rover PHEV SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase deals

The SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase is designed for people who demand even more space in a Range Rover. The exterior is extended by 200mm to deliver an additional 192mm of interior space, increasing the legroom and passenger comfort. You can also opt for a Long Wheelbase version of the Autobiography trim.

Thanks to a price tag of around £168,000 when new, there aren’t many of these available on the used car market, but you still get the low running costs associated with a plug-in hybrid - just remember to plug it in when you get home from work to minimise your fuel usage and maximise the proportion of your journeys you cover using electric power alone.

You can view the SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase as an Autobiography with an enhanced experience for rear-seat passengers. Take the Executive Class Comfort pack, which features adjustable bolsters, upper seat shoulder support, headrest pillows, ‘hot stone’ massage function, heated armrests, heated calf rest and a dedicated area to warm your feet.

There’s also a full length rear centre console with Zenith cloth, front and rear refrigerators, four-zone climate control, electric close rear doors, perforated leather headlining and deployable tables with wood finish. Basically, think of the best hotel room you’ve stayed in, then double the level of opulence.
