The Mini Countryman PHEV is the only plug-in hybrid Mini you can get, with the Mini Electric available if you want to go fully electric. This means that the Countryman PHEV is the ideal car if you’re looking for a retro family car that offers the ability to run on electric power alone for short journeys, with the backup of a petrol engine, should you need to cover many hundreds of miles in one go.

Launched in 2017, the Countryman PHEV was one of the first plug-in hybrids to hit the market, which is good news for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there are plenty of used versions to choose from. Secondly, you can save up to £15,000 on the price of a new Countryman PHEV, making it a far more affordable prospect.

You might want to consider a post-update model. Although the makeover was only skin deep, the revised grille was a welcome change, while new LED headlights, new colours and wheels, plus a new 5.5-inch screen in place of a traditional driving information display were other improvements. Fewer buttons on the dashboard make the cabin feel less cluttered, too.

There was no change to the plug-in hybrid petrol-electric setup, so all Countryman PHEVs feature a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor for a combined output of 220hp. The 0-62mph time is an impressively quick 6.8 seconds, which makes for speedy getaways in the city and stress-free overtaking manoeuvres.

Recharging the battery should take less than four hours when using a domestic socket, or around 2.5 hours when using a wallbox. The car should come with a Type 2 cable for public chargers and a three-pin cable for household use, so make sure these are present when you’re buying a used Countryman PHEV.

With a fully charged battery, you can expect to achieve up to 30 miles of range, although the distance depends on the outside temperature, any accessories being used and how much fun you have with the accelerator pedal. Drive smoothly and gently for maximum range. Claimed fuel economy of between 148.7mpg and 166.2mpg is possible, but you must ensure you recharge the car overnight and make good use of the electric motor to get close to this. Fail to charge the car and you'll burn through far more petrol.

Choosing a Mini Countryman as your next plug-in hybrid is only part of the story; you also need to decide whether to opt for the Classic, Sport, Exclusive or Shadow Edition version, which offer different styling details and standard kit. Read on to discover more about each trim level and to check out some of the best deals currently available.

Mini Countryman Cooper S E Classic plug-in hybrid deals

These specifications are based on the Mini Countryman PHEV following the 2019 update. As with any Mini, the spec list is only half the story, because new Minis are available with a long list of personalisation options - with most new buyers adding many of these to their cars. While buying a used Countryman removes the joy of selecting your own option packs, you’ll have fun finding the car that’s right for you - and will save money in the process, as many of these option packs were very expensive when new, but add little to the price of used versions.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights and LED rear lights with Union Jack designs (both following the 2019 update), ambient lighting, an 8.8-inch central media display, Apple CarPlay, automatic lights and wipers, and rear parking sensors.

The Classic trim, which costs £34,500 when new, features Moonwalk Grey exterior paint, 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seats, leather steering wheel and grey headlining. If you see a Classic in a different colour, it’s because the original owner spent money on an upgrade; check to see what other options might be fitted to the car.

Mini Countryman Cooper S E Sport plug-in hybrid deals

Upgrading to the mid-range Sport trim adds £3,000 to the price of a Countryman PHEV when new, but the gap shouldn’t be as large when you’re buying used. It certainly lives up to its name, with the Sport trim giving the car some extra sporty spice without the scary price tag.

Highlights include Chili Red exterior paint, 18-inch John Cooper Works alloy wheels, bodykit and spoiler, piano black exterior accents and black roof and mirror caps. On the inside, the Sport gets a John Cooper Works makeover and stainless steel pedals for a sportier feel.

The Countryman PHEV Sport also gets sports suspension, which is something to consider when you’re buying used. The firmer suspension is great when you’re on a country road as it makes the car feel sharper to drive, but it might be too firm for some in the city, especially if your commute involves lots of potholes.

Mini Countryman Cooper S E Exclusive plug-in hybrid deals

The Exclusive trim is perfect for any potential Mini Countryman PHEV drivers who like the look of some of the Mini Yours exterior and interior options, as some of them come as standard. It costs the same as the Sport model, so you have a choice of sporty or posh. We promise that’s the final reference to the Spice Girls.

Highlights include smart Enigmatic Black exterior paintwork, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, silver roof and mirror caps, a soft leather steering wheel, sporty leather seats, dark headlining and nicer carpet mats, which give it an upmarket feel.

Mini Countryman Cooper S E Shadow Edition plug-in hybrid deals

Based on the Sport trim, the Shadow Edition features Midnight Black exterior paintwork, piano black exterior accents, 19-inch John Cooper Works Circuit alloy wheels, black roof rails and a Shadow Edition logo on the bonnet.

The makeover continues on the inside, with piano black interior trim with Shadow Edition logo, door sill finishers and anthracite headlining. The finishing touch is that the car projects the Mini logo, for turning heads when the sun goes down.
