The Mercedes A250e is the plug-in hybrid version of this popular upmarket compact hatchback and saloon. Launched in 2020, it’s one of the highlights of the A-Class range, thanks to its low running costs and the ability to run on electric power.

Power is sourced from a combination of a 1.3-litre petrol engine producing 160hp and an electric motor developing 102hp. This electric motor is fed by a 15.6kWh battery which can be recharged in five hours and 30 minutes when using a domestic socket. This drops to one hour and 45 minutes when using a 7.4kW wallbox.

Mercedes quotes an electric range of 42-43 miles per charge for the hatchback and 44 miles for the saloon. Impressive figures, but even though 30-35 miles is more realistic, you could complete your daily commute without requiring the use of the petrol engine - provided you remember to charge the car rather than simply running it on petrol.

Official CO2 emissions of just 26g/km mean the A250e is ideal for company car drivers due to its low tax bills, but private drivers will love the fuel economy of 282.5mpg. To achieve that, you’ll need to recharge the battery every night, so get used to plugging it in when you get home from work. This will maximise how much of your journeys will be covered on electric power, reducing the amount of petrol you get through.

The only penalties for choosing the plug-in hybrid over the more conventional models in the A-Class range are a smaller fuel tank to make room for the battery, and a slightly firmer ride. Both are minor issues, not least because you’ll be spending a lot of time in electric mode if you charge regularly, so you’re unlikely to notice the 35-litre tank.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard, along with a decent level of standard equipment. It’s quick, too. Not as fast as the high-performance Mercedes-AMG A45, but a 0-62mph time of 6.6 seconds is plenty quick enough for most drivers. You’ll also enjoy the thrill of instant and silent acceleration in electric mode, although having too much fun will put a dent in the electric range.

The Mercedes A-Class offers a quality feel throughout and one of the best interiors you’ll find in a car of this size. If anything, the A250e feels even more upmarket, especially in electric mode. Read on for the best deals on the plug-in hybrid and to discover more about the AMG Line Executive Edition, AMG Line Premium Edition and AMG Line Premium Plus trim levels.

Standard equipment across the range includes two charging cables (Type 2 and Type 3), comfort suspension, pre-entry climate control and acoustic ambient protection. A 7kW home charger is available for around £500 including installation.

Mercedes A250e AMG Line Executive Edition deals

Prices start from just over £35,000 for the hatchback and just shy of £36,000 for the saloon for those buying new, but used prices have dropped below the £30,000 mark. That’s excellent value for a car still covered by a manufacturer warranty and with the promise of low running costs.

Another advantage of choosing the A 250e over a regular A-Class is the fact that the mid-range AMG Line Executive Edition is the entry-level model. This means you get more for your money.

Highlights include 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, remote vehicle charging, Artico artificial leather seats with grey stitching, a multifunction steering wheel, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, tinted windows, an impressive 10.3-inch touchscreen media system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Look out for some of the options packs when buying a used Mercedes A-Class plug-in hybrid. The Driver Assistance package is worth £1,500 and includes the likes of active blind spot assist, adaptive cruise control, active speed limit assist and route-based speed adjustment.

An A-Class plug-in hybrid is finished in polar white non-metallic paint as standard. Metallic paint costs around £600, although the original owner would have paid more for Patagonia Red. Look out for this eye-catching hue on the used car market.
