The cheap diesel cars exempt from low emissions zone charges: see the full list of Euro 6-compliant diesel cars

For years, "Euro 6" meant little to anyone outside the car industry, but they are now two essential words for anyone in the market for a diesel car.

It's the name given to current emissions standards, which every new car must meet. Diesel owners will need a Euro 6-compliant car to avoid daily charges of more than £10 in low emission zones from next year. These include London's ultra-low emissions zone, and a clean air zone in the centre of Birmingham. The rules are different for petrol cars and few will be affected.

Every new car registered since September 2015 has been Euro 6-compliant, so any diesel car under three years old should be exempt from the charges. But if your budget is limited, buying one of these relatively recent cars could force you into a small or poorly-equipped model.

Some manufacturers introduced Euro 6 cars long before September 2015 - as early as 2012 in some cases. These tend to be cheaper and will still avoid planned clean air zone restrictions. For example, Euro 6 diesel Vauxhall Astras have been sold since 2014 and prices start at £6,695 or £117 per month with finance. If you're buying one of these older cars, it's worth asking for confirmation that they are Euro 6-compliant for complete certainty.

Scroll down for a full list of cars that met Euro 6 standards at least a year early, and the dates that they became available, or click on a manufacturer to jump straight to their early Euro 6-compliant models.

All of the Euro 6 compliant cars below went on sale at least a year before the emissions standard became mandatory in September 2015.

The date next to each model shows when the first Euro 6 versions appeared on British roads. However, dealerships often had stocks of earlier Euro 5 cars that were sold after the updated models arrived. It's always best to look at the technical information to confirm a car's Euro emissions rating. To be on the safe side, you should also ask a car retailer to double-check.

Some Euro 6-compliant cars, including those from VW, Mercedes and Audi, have been recalled to improve emissons performance. These remain Euro 6-compliant.
