What are the benefits of a Euro 5 car?
Aside from being better for the environment and everyone’s health, a Euro 5 petrol-engined car means you don't have to pay London's ULEZ charge. Petrol cars must be Euro 4 or above to qualify, while diesel drivers need to find a Euro 6 car in order to benefit. Euro 5 petrol car drivers will also avoid paying in clean air zones such as those in Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow. Euro 5 cars emit less carbon dioxide (CO2) than their Euro 4 or older equivalent models, so your VED car tax will be reduced.
How do I know if my car is Euro 5 compliant?
Any car that was registered from 1 January 2011 up to 31 August 2015 had to be Euro 5-compliant as a minimum standard. Stricter Euro 6 rules became the baseline standard from 1 September 2015. Keep in mind that many manufacturers sold cars that met Euro 5 rules for years before it was the legally required standard, so you aren’t restricted to models sold during that four-and-a-half year window. There are plenty of online emissions checkers, where you can input your car’s registration number to see its emissions standard. Your car’s emission class will also be printed on its V5C registration document.
What are the Euro 5 emissions standards?
The Euro emissions standards have been governing how clean a vehicle engine has to be in order to be permitted to be sold in Europe since 1992, with what is retrospectively called Euro 1. Today’s standard is Euro 6, although even stricter Euro 7 regulations are expected to be in place before the start of 2026. Euro 5 standards mostly targeted diesel engines, mandating the standard fitment of diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to help cut down on harmful particulate emissions.
