People carriers and seven seaters with big boots

Few cars are as family-friendly as people carriers and seven-seat SUVs. Here are eight big-booted options for those after lots of space

Families love people carriers and seven-seat SUVs. With space for up to seven people and the convenience of a helpful big boot, these cars are perfect for family life. Pick the right one, and the car could take your children through from the tentative first day at preschool to the tearful farewell as you pack them off for university.

People carriers come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the five-seat models offer the low running costs of a family hatchback with the bonus of more interior space and a larger boot. Seven-seat models give you the choice of a large boot or a pair of occasional seats in the third row.

Some van-based people carriers even manage to blend seven seats with a large boot, making them the most practical family cars you can get. We’ve pulled together a list of people carriers and seven-seaters with big boots, with prices to suit all budgets. Order online with BuyaCar and each could be delivered to your door without you even having to step outside.

MPVs with large boot space

1. Citroen Berlingo

Used deals Limited stock

The Citroen Berlingo is the automotive equivalent of having your cake and eating it. The van-based people carrier allows you to carry seven people while retaining the convenience of a big boot. This isn’t always the case when looking at a people carrier.

There are two versions: M and XL. As the name suggests, the Berlingo XL is the larger of the two and the one to buy if you’re after seven seats. It’s 35cm longer than the Berlingo M, with a third row of seats that can slide forwards and backwards. They can even be removed if you wish.

With all seven seats in use, the Berlingo XL offers a huge 1,050 litres of luggage space under the parcel shelf, or 1,900 litres to the ceiling. Fold the second row and remove the third row of seats, and this increases to an enormous 3,500 litres if you load up to the ceiling. Maximum capacity is a humongous 4,000 litres with the front passenger seat folded down. The tailgate is the size of a barn door and features a separate opening rear window for added practicality.

2. Peugeot Traveller

Used deals Limited stock

The Peugeot Traveller is a supersize version of the Peugeot Rifter. It’s almost identical to the Citroen SpaceTourer and Toyota ProAce Verso, with space for up to eight people and the practicality of a large van.

Indeed, short of buying or renting a van, few cars are as practical and spacious as the Peugeot Traveller. There are two versions: the 4.95m Traveller Standard and the 5.30m Traveller Long. Both are limited to a height of 1.9m, so you needn’t fear the height restrictions in multi-storey car parks.

In eight-seat mode, the Traveller Standard offers 603 litres of luggage capacity to the window line, or 798 litres to the ceiling. These figures increase to 989 litres and 1,384 litres respectively in the Traveller Long. With the rear seats removed, the Traveller Long offers as much as 2,932 litres of space. Total capacity is a warehouse-rivalling 4,554 litres in the Traveller Long, but you’ll need to remove all rear seats to access all this space.

3. Ford Tourneo Connect

Used deals Limited stock

Don’t let the fact that the Ford Tourneo Connect is based on the Transit Connect van put you off, because this is one of the most appealing people carriers you can get. Not only is it surprisingly good to drive, it’s also hugely practical, with almost enough headroom in the back for shorter people to stand up.

There are actually three versions: the five-seat Tourneo Connect, the five-seat Grand Tourneo Connect and the seven-seat Grand Tourneo Connect. Using the patented Goldilocks method of recommendation, the five-seat Tourneo Connect is ‘just right’, provided you don't regularly need space for seven people.

Go for the Grand Connect and it offers an impressive 1,529 litres of luggage capacity with all seven seats in use, which increases to 2,761 litres in five-seat mode. Even the standard Tourneo Connect can muster 1,029 litres with five passengers on board. Opt for the 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel and you should be able to achieve between 40mpg and 45mpg, so fuel costs should be relatively low.

4. Volkswagen Touareg

Used deals from £19,750
Monthly finance from £610*

Although the Touareg is large enough for seven people, Volkswagen opted to make it one of the most spacious five-seat SUVs you can buy. This means you get a huge amount of interior space and a large boot to… er, boot.

Luggage capacity is an impressive 810 litres, which is 40 litres more than you’ll find in the Audi Q7. Coincidentally, the Touareg is built around the same platform used by the Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne, so you’re buying into an exclusive set with the Touareg.

Folding the rear seats down increases the boot capacity to 1,800 litres, which will make you the envy of the Swedish furniture store car park - this is about as big as upmarket cars get. Power is sourced from a choice of 3.0-litre diesel and petrol engines, both of which are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. If you have one eye on running costs, choose the diesel, as this should return up to 35mpg.

5. Skoda Kodiaq

Used deals from £18,550
Monthly finance from £488*

While most Skoda Kodiaq SUVs leave the factory with seven seats, we wouldn’t discount the five-seat version. It offers a massive 835 litres of luggage capacity, which increases to 2,065 litres with the rear seats folded down. That makes it more practical than the larger and more expensive Touareg.

Unfortunately, the five-seat Kodiaq is offered only in entry-level SE trim, so you’re forced into having seven seats when choosing the SE Drive, SE L, SportLine and L&K versions. It’s not all bad news, because you still get 270 litres of space in seven-seat mode, which is enough to rival a supermini. With the rear seats folded, the seven-seat Kodiaq offers 630 litres of luggage capacity.

Standard specification is generous, with SE trim featuring 18-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen media system, a digital radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear parking sensors and keyless start.

6. Seat Alhambra

Used deals Limited stock

Although people carriers lack the style and glamour of some SUVs, they remain the best choice if you’re after maximum space and practicality. The Seat Alhambra is a good case in point, because it offers seating for seven adults and a supermini-rivaling 267 litres of luggage space with all seats occupied.

It gets better, because with the third row of seats folded away, the Alhambra’s boot increases to 658 litres, which is enough to rival a large estate car. The practicality is enhanced by a low loading lip and a perfectly flat floor. Some models even come with an electric tailgate and electric sliding rear doors.

If the children don’t mind being left behind, the Seat Alhambra will swallow 2,297 litres of luggage in two-seat mode. There are also handy storage areas throughout the cabin, including hidden boxes below the floor that are perfect for tablets and other valuables.

7. Volkswagen Golf SV

Used deals from £10,698
Monthly finance from £0*

The Volkswagen Golf SV is the most family-friendly alternative to the popular Volkswagen Golf hatchback. We should point out that the Golf Estate offers more boot space, but the Golf SV scores points in other areas.

For starters, the rear bench can slide backwards and forwards to provide up to 590 litres of boot space. That’s only 15 litres short of the outgoing Golf Estate. You also sit higher in the Golf SV, which enhances the feeling of space.

With the rear seats folded, the Golf SV offers an impressive 1,520 litres of space, which is only 100 litres shy of the Golf Estate. The ride quality is excellent, with the Golf SV feeling just as good to drive as the standard Golf. That’s high praise.

8. BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

Used deals from £10,900
Monthly finance from £0*

If you’re after a five-seat people carrier with a touch of class, look no further than the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. It’s an incredibly popular car, with family buyers appreciating its blend of quality, space and badge appeal.

There’s 468 litres of boot space with all five seats in use, but this can be increased to 1,510 litres by pressing a button to drop the electrically-folding rear seats. A moveable boot floor is handy for carrying smaller items, although this is absent in the plug-in hybrid version. Indeed, boot space drops to 400 litres in the 225xe plug-in hybrid.

The back seats can accommodate three adults in comfort, with plenty of headroom and space for your feet, even if you’re sitting in the middle seat. If you require seven seats, take a look at the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.
