What is a saloon car?
A saloon is often what children draw a side profile of when they are asked to make a picture of a car. There’s a shape at the front for the engine, a larger space in the middle for the passengers and another space at the rear for luggage. In industry-speak, this is a three-box shape, and most frequently are saloons by definition. More specifically, a saloon is where there is ample space inside for passengers front and rear, while the boot is accessed by raising a lid that isn’t connected to the rear window.
What is the difference between a saloon and a hatchback?
Where a manufacturer sells both saloon and hatchback versions of the same model, as Audi does with its A3 and Mercedes offers with its A-Class, the differences are almost always confined to the back end of the car. While saloons have a separate boot lid, meaning back seat passengers are not exposed to inclement weather when it is opened, hatchbacks have a larger opening because their tailgate includes the rear window.
While this gives hatchbacks a number of practical advantages in that they are often able to swallow taller, bulkier items, it is frequently the case that saloons have a greater volume of boot space overall. Plus, many saloons still have folding rear seats so they can accommodate longer loads when needed. Because saloon’s boots are more isolated in that regard, the passenger area can prove to be quieter and more refined.
Is a four-door saloon the same thing as a four-door coupe?
While they will have a number of similarities including sharing many of the same engines and underpinnings where a manufacturer offers such a choice in its range, a saloon is more practical than its coupe alternative, as evidenced by Mercedes' A-Class Saloon and CLA Coupe. A saloon’s passenger area will be more spacious, particularly in the rear where head- and legroom are usually compromised in coupe models.
Similarly, a saloon’s boot will usually be larger overall and often more practically shaped. Where a saloon often loses out to its coupe alternative is aesthetically – the former may be considered less interesting and exciting to look at, meaning potentially customers would opt for the latter and be prepared to accept the compromises mentioned.
