If you like the idea of a new car, but want maximum value for money, buying nearly new could be the way to go. As the name suggests, these are models that have been registered in the past year and have limited mileage on the clock. The industry normally considers any car with less than 5,000 miles and under a year old as nearly new.

So, they’re not quite brand new, but fresh enough to provide that tangible ‘new car’ feel, and there are numerous benefits to heading down this route. Firstly, and most importantly for many drivers, there’s price. There are often savings of several thousands of pounds to be made on new car prices if you opt for a nearly new model. Choose carefully and you could save yourself up to 35%.

Nearly new cars ought to be in great condition, and have a significant percentage of their warranty left, too, meaning there should be nothing to worry about if anything goes wrong. Don't get complacent however, it's still worthwhile to do your due diligence before committing to a purchase as the car will have been used to some extent.

Here we’ve picked out eight cars that make great nearly new buys, from superminis to sports cars and hatchbacks to SUVs, all available from BuyaCar for less than £35,000.

Best nearly-new car deals

1. Skoda Octavia Estate

Used deals from £19,498
Monthly finance from £297

The Octavia has long been regarded as one of the best all-round cars on the market, and it makes particular sense as a nearly new model at the moment. With an all-new version recently introduced, there’s a host of old-style cars under a year old that have had their prices pushed down even further.

In reality, they don’t look that different from the new model, so won’t seem out of date, and they make for tremendous value. You get proven Volkswagen Group tech - as Skoda is owned by VW - and in Estate guise a massive 610-litre boot, plus build quality is impressive. Savings of around 35% off the new car equivalent are possible if you choose carefully.

2. Honda Jazz

Used deals from £12,995
Monthly finance from £198

The Jazz is another car that makes sense to look at now because of the arrival of a new version. Again, this has reduced the value of nearly new old-style models, meaning there are some great bargains that can be picked up.

The supermini is a solid performer on the road rather than being truly engaging to drive, but where it does score is for practicality, with owners always praising its innovative 'Magic Seats' layout - which features a rear seat base that can be folded up to load large items into the rear footwells, as well as seat backs that fold down - in satisfaction surveys.

The CVT automatic gearbox is an acquired taste due to its whining under acceleration - as it holds the engine at a set speed when accelerating - so bear that in mind if you want an auto. Savings of around 25% can be had over comparable new car prices.

3. BMW Z4

Used deals Limited stock

If you fancy a bit of top-down fun mixed with the appeal of a upmarket badge, then the BMW Z4 could be for you. The two-seat soft-top was developed alongside the new Toyota Supra so has impeccable sporting credentials, and is an undeniably enticing option if glamorous high-speed cruising is your goal.

Power comes from 194hp and 255hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines in the 20i and 30i, while the 340hp 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder M40i sits at the top of the range. But all this comes at a price new, which makes buying nearly new a sensible decision, as you’ll slash thousands from the cost.

4. Kia Picanto

Used deals from £8,999
Monthly finance from £146

There’s less to save if a city car is on your radar, because the new car price is relatively low. But choosing a nearly new Picanto still makes perfect sense, as you can get a substantial 20% or so off the on-the-road price and enjoy a great-condition runabout that will still have six of the seven years of Kia’s warranty left, giving great peace of mind.

There's a new Picanto on the way in late 2020, so prices are only set to get lower still, so this is one model to keep an eye on if you're not planning to change your car striaght away. Servicing costs are affordable and the car itself delivers an enjoyable driving experience, plus it comes with a choice of petrol engines.

5. Vauxhall Astra

Used deals from £13,995
Monthly finance from £210

The Astra has never been considered a particularly exciting choice, but its reputation does it a disservice as it’s actually an extremely capable compact family hatch that looks good and drives well. And because it’s such a popular choice, there are loads to choose from, increasing your chances of getting a great deal.

It helps to have an idea of what you want, though, as there’s a wide choice of engines and trims, making navigating your way through what’s on offer a challenge. It’s worth it, though, as all models are well equipped and there are some nearly new models available on BuyaCar that are around half the price of the list price when new.

6. Ford Kuga

Used deals from £14,999
Monthly finance from £225

The third-generation version of Ford’s mid-size SUV recently went on sale, but there’s fantastic value to be had from this second-generation model, which is available nearly new on BuyaCar from around £15,000. That's a very low price for an appealing all-round SUV.

The mid-size SUV, which competes against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, is generally considered to be among the more enjoyable cars of this type to drive, with decent handling, and the 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engines and 2.0-litre TDCi diesel units are both recommended. And being a Ford, there’s a huge amount of models available to choose from.

7. Hyundai Santa Fe

Used deals Limited stock

After a great-value large SUV? Look no further than the Hyundai Santa Fe, which does all that its more upmarket rivals can do at a more sensible price. And the five- or seven-seater is yet another example of a car that is about to be replaced, meaning year-old nearly new cars with limited mileage are even more affordable than they would be ordinarily.

The only engine option is a 2.2-litre diesel, but it’s up to the job of hauling this SUV around, while the interior is comfortable and spacious and a little bit more luxurious than most people would probably expect a Hyundai to be. You’ll find models available on BuyaCar that will save you around 25% of the new car price.

8. Peugeot 2008

Used deals from £12,764
Monthly finance from £183

Small SUVs – or crossovers – have exploded in popularity in recent years, and one of the most successful has been the Peugeot 2008, which has become a common sight on UK roads. And with a shiny new version on sale, there’s never been a better time to pick up a fantastic deal on a previous-generation nearly new model, with some available at around 65% of their original new car price.

For that you get an easy to drive car that offers a choice of petrol and diesel power and which has traditionally fared well in owner satisfaction surveys. The small steering wheel - which you look at the dials over, rather than through - takes a little bit of getting used to, though.
