Tempted by the sparkle of a brand new car? There's no question that new car smell is one of the better things in life, but it's even better if you don't have to pay through the nose to get it. Buying a new car can be costly, but there are ways of reducing that cost - potentially saving yourself thousands of pounds - while still getting that new car look and feel.

One of the best ways to get a new car if you're after maximum value is not to buy a brand new car at all. Instead, you can turn to pre-registered car deals, which offer all the benefits of a new car - the car will barely have any miles on it and often the latest number plate, too - but none of the financial drawbacks. Technically a pre-reg car isn't brand new, as it's been registered in the name of the dealer, but for all intents and purposes, it will look and smell like a brand new car.

So if you don't mind your new car arriving with a handful of miles on the clock, pre-reg deals are the way to go. Here we've picked out four excellent deals on practically new family cars with savings of up to £9,000 off of what you'd pay for a new model from the dealership. If numbers like that raise your pulse then you won't want to look any further, whether you have cash to pay or want to make the most of great value finance deals.

We have thousands of pre-registered car deals available on BuyaCar, so don't hesitate to look beyond the four options we've picked out here, there are bound to be many more enticing deals waiting for you. If you're after something with a little more room, we also have some great pre-reg deals on SUVs here.

Pre-registered Mercedes A-Class deals

Mercedes-Benz A180d Sport Auto list price: £26,180
BuyaCar price from: £19,980
Monthly finance from: £264

The latest Mercedes A-Class sports a modern and minimalist dual-screen digital dashboard display, but its high-tech design is more than just skin deep: every A-Class is fitted with Mercedes' latest 'MBUX' (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) media software, which works to personalise your car according to your usage patterns and preferences.

It can predict the radio station you want to listen to at different times of the day and learn how you speak, with an effective voice control function that should become more accurate over time and lets you programme the sat-nav, for instance, with just simple instructions.

Sport models offer a good balance of value and technology. They include 17-inch alloy wheels, climate control and powerful LED headlights, while the Executive pack increases the size of the central dashboard media screen and adds heated front seats for a little extra cost.

With a high level of equipment and pre-registered discounts of more than £6,000 regularly available, the Mercedes A-Class is a compelling alternative to a brand new Ford Focus which comes in at a similar price.

Pre-registered Honda Civic deals

Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo SR list price: £22,115
BuyaCar price from: £20,619
Monthly finance from: £328

Anyone keen for bold styling in a sensible hatchback ought to have their attention grabbed by the Honda Civic. It hasn't always been the most exciting car on the market, but in recent times the Japanese manufacturer has sought to develop a more striking image for its popular family hatchback - especially in sporty Type R guise.

Here, we have another opportunity to save as much as £4,000. The Civic in SR trim is the cheapest option on this list as a brand new car but it doesn't fall far short of its more expensive competition in terms of equipment. In fact, even if you step up to EX trim with more tech included it remains a cheaper choice, with pre-reg deals from £20,888 still saving you up to £4,000 on the list price.

We're sticking with the SR version here though, as that extra saving still gets you a striking family car that's good fun to drive and, despite the price, it's hardly basic. You'll still be treated to a seven-inch touchscreen media system with digital radio and smartphone integration including Android Auto and Apple Carplay, dual-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control.

Pre-registered Peugeot 508 SW deals

Peugeot 508 SW 1.5 BlueHDI 130 GT Line Auto list price: £33,605
BuyaCar price from: £22,995
Monthly finance from: £323

Now for something a little more spacious and mature. The Peugeot 508 has become much more refined in its latest form. The French brand has nailed the styling of its latest generation of cars, bringing its entire range into the 21st century with a sharp look and feel, and the 508 SW is no different.

Everything about the 508 SW is very 'cool', it's available in a moody selection of greys and blues, while you can opt for red if you fancy a bit of colour, while the interior is also dark and simplistic, yet upmarket in in look and feel. It's an estate car, so you can expect a large boot - 530 litres with rear seats up, expanding to a significant 1,780 litres if you fold them down, which is a higher maximum capacity than the more expensive BMW 5 Series Touring.

But it's not just in terms of boot space that the 508 SW competes with the best in its class, the amount of tech on-board is pretty strong too. GT Line trim features two media displays, one is a 12.3-inch digital instrument display behind the steering wheel, the other is a 10-inch touchscreen media system with digital radio, sat-nav and smartphone connectivity. With huge pre-registered savings of around £9,000, this is a compelling family car option.

Pre-registration Volkswagen Golf deals

Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI 150 Style list price: £26,095
BuyaCar price from: £23,999
Monthly finance from: £350

Finally, we have the newest car available on this list. The latest VW Golf - the eighth generation - only hit UK roads in spring 2020, so you'll find all of the very latest tech included here, in terms of interior equipment and engine efficiency. It's currently available in three specification levels - Life, Style and R-Line, and while prices are up at over £25,000 for mid-range Style models, pre-reg deals slash those by around £2,500.

The newest Golf has clearly retained much of the DNA from previous generations in terms of its looks, but the interior is fresh and includes plenty of up-to-date tech, especially in Style trim. There's three-zone air-conditioning with a control panel in the back so rear-seated passengers can manage their own temperature, while 30-colour ambient lighting and lumbar support for the front seats should add another level of comfort.

There's also a huge list of safety and driver assistance features, which includes everything you would expect to find on a brand new car in 2020. The 1.5-litre, 150hp petrol engine we've chosen here is also well-suited modern day driving, with fuel economy claimed to reach 50mpg - decent for a reasonably punchy petrol hatchback.
