Tempted by the sparkle of a brand new car? There's no question that new car smell is one of the better things in life, but it's even better if you don't have to pay through the nose to get it. Buying a new car can be costly, but there are ways of reducing that cost - potentially saving yourself thousands of pounds - while still getting that new car look and feel.

One of the best ways to get a new car if you're after maximum value is not to buy a brand new car at all. Instead, you can turn to pre-registered car deals, which offer all the benefits of a new car - the car will barely have any miles on it and often the latest number plate, too - but none of the financial drawbacks. Technically a 'pre-reg' car isn't quite brand new, as it's been registered in the name of the dealer, but for all intents and purposes, it will look and smell like a new car.

So if you don't mind your new car arriving with a handful of miles on the clock, pre-reg deals are the way to go. Here we've picked out four excellent deals on practically new family cars with savings of up to £9,000 off of what you'd pay for a new model from the dealership. If numbers like that raise your pulse then you won't want to look any further, whether you have cash to slash or want to make the most of PCP finance or Hire Purchase deals.

We have thousands of pre-registered car deals available on BuyaCar, so don't hesitate to look beyond the four options we've picked out here, as there are bound to be many more enticing deals that could be right for you. If you're after something with a little more room, we also have some great value pre-reg deals on SUVs here.

Pre-registered Honda Civic deals

Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo SR list price: £23,455
BuyaCar price from: £18,500
Monthly finance from: £269*

Anyone keen for bold styling in a sensible hatchback ought to have their attention grabbed by the Honda Civic. It hasn't always been the most exciting car on the market, but in recent times the Japanese manufacturer has sought to develop a more striking image for its popular family hatchback - especially in sporty Type R guise.

Here, we have another opportunity to save as much as £4,000. The Civic in SR trim is the cheapest option on this list as a brand new car but it doesn't fall far short of its more expensive competition in terms of equipment. In fact, even if you step up to EX trim with more tech included it remains a cheaper choice, with pre-reg deals from £24,617 still saving you up to £4,000 on the list price.

We're sticking with the SR version here though, as that extra saving still gets you a striking family car that's good fun to drive and, despite the price, it's hardly basic. You'll still be treated to a seven-inch touchscreen media system with digital radio and smartphone integration including Android Auto and Apple Carplay, dual-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control.

Pre-registered Audi A4 deals

Audi A4 35 TFSI Black Edition S tronic list price: £36,025
BuyaCar price from: £31,499
Monthly finance from: £469*

The Audi A4 has long been available as an upmarket saloon for drivers who enjoy comfortable and refined cruising. While it might not be as practical as an SUV or even a large hatchback, the A4 Saloon makes up for that with excellent engines and a quality interior. It's a car designed to make your life better while you're in it.

If you're looking for a car that's going to deliver luxury at every turn, you have to consider an Audi of some sort, and the A4 is perhaps the most luxurious family car you can buy at this price - especially if you're looking at a high-end Black Edition model. The list of features includes four-zone air-conditioning for front and rear passengers, the Audi virtual cockpit media display with sat-nav, an eight-speaker sound system, digital radio and Bluetooth. There's also heated sports seats at the front with electrically adjustable lumbar support for added comfort.

While the saloon-style boot might have a smaller opening than something like a VW Golf, the boot itself does offer a handy 460-litres of space, and the 40:20:40 folding rear seats help to expand that if you're in need of a larger loading area.

Pre-registration Volkswagen Golf deals

Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI 130 Life list price: £24,470
BuyaCar price from: £20,469
Monthly finance from: £278*

The latest VW Golf - the eighth generation - first hit UK roads in spring 2020, so you'll find all of the very latest tech included here, in terms of interior equipment and engine efficiency.

The newest Golf has clearly retained much of the DNA from previous generations in terms of its looks, but the interior is fresh and includes plenty of up-to-date tech. Even in the cheapest Life spec models, air-conditioning, ambient lighting and a customisable 10.3-inch digital display are all standard kit.

There's also a huge list of safety and driver assistance features, which includes everything you would expect to find on a brand new car in 2020. The 1.5-litre, 130hp petrol engine we've chosen here is also well-suited modern day driving, with fuel economy claimed to exceed 50mpg - decent for a reasonably punchy petrol hatchback.

Pre-registered Vauxhall Astra deals

Vauxhall Astra 1.2 Turbo 145 SRi Nav list price: £19,960
BuyaCar price from: £15,995
Monthly finance from: £243*

At the more affordable end of the scale, we have the ever-popular Vauxhall Astra. It's much cheaper than the other options on this list, but that's what it makes it so attractive to a huge amount of drivers, because it's still a perfectly usable family car with decent engines and a comfortable interior.

The fact it's so cheap means you can get hold of a top-end SRi Nav model and still save money compared to many alternatives. Sure, it might not feel quite so luxurious as an Audi A3 or Volkswagen Golf, but it still comes fitted with a seven-inch touchscreen media display with sat-nav, comfortable sports seats and dual-zone climate control.

Aside from the list of kit, if your priority is to find a small car that's going to have enough space for you and your family, the Astra is one you can add to your list. With Isofix points on both of the outer rear seats, and a 370-litre boot offering enough space for a pushchair and a weekly shop, this could be all the car you ever need.
