New cars are expensive, but it’s amazing how much you can save on a practically brand new 2020 model with less than 1,000 miles on it

When you’re hunting for a new car, there are few things worse than discovering that your perfect vehicle is beyond your budget and having to settle for a much less appealing model. But if you look for a nearly-new model instead, you’ll find that there are oodles of cars with thousands of pounds worth of savings attached - many of which may only be a few months old and only have covered several hundred miles.

How come? There are a few reasons: many of these are 'pre-registered' cars, registered by dealers to count towards their sales targets and then sold on for a much lower price as a used car, while others might be 'ex-demonstrators' that have been used for a handful of test drives at a dealership and are then sold on when they reach a certain age.

That means that these cars with scarcely any miles on the clock come back onto the market, having lost a large proportion of their value - something that occurs from the moment they’re driven away for the first time - and offering excellent value to those waiting to snap them up.

So if you’re patient and prepared to do your homework - rather than simply rushing out to purchase a brand new car, whatever the price - you could land your dream car for a fraction of the price you’d pay for it if it was fresh out of the factory.

And this isn’t just true of luxury vehicles either: you could save many thousands on ordinary, family cars just by being savvy and saying no to a brand new car. That’s where BuyaCar can help: we’ve rounded up the cars with the biggest discounts on the site to give you an idea of just how much you could save at the click of a button.

Cars with the biggest discounts

1. Audi A8

List price £78,820
BuyaCar price £46,400
Saving £32,420 (41.13%)

If it’s comfort you’re after, things don’t get much better than the Audi A8. It’s one of the most luxurious cars on sale today, with a high-quality interior finish and cutting-edge technology that even offers some degree of autonomous driving.

With 1,000 miles on the clock, this 2020 model has a 3.0-litre diesel engine producing 290hp, resulting in 0-62mph in just under 6.0 seconds and around 35mpg in real-world driving. This makes the A8 suitably fast for a luxury car, while remaining much more efficient than the petrol-engined version.

Behind the wheel, you’ll find that the ride is exceptionally smooth thanks to the A8’s air suspension, which soaks up bumps in the road surface without excessive lean in corners. It’s not quite as good as the Mercedes S-Class in this respect, but the £30,000+ you could save here is a price worth (not) paying.

2. Jaguar XJ

List price £72,985
BuyaCar price £43,300
Saving £29,685 (40.67%)

The Jaguar XJ is an alternative to the Audi A8 above, but one that’s more focused on the driver than any VIP passengers in the back seats. The latest model feels sporty from behind the wheel with agile handling around corners, while the sleek exterior styling should make it stand out on the road.

On BuyaCar, you can secure a 2020 XJ that has covered just 697 miles for less than £45,000 (or £636 per month), saving a massive 40% compared to those buying it new from a dealership. The engine produces 306hp - plenty to whisk you and the family around, while 40mpg from the 3.0-litre diesel engine means trips to fill up shouldn't be too frequent.

The XJ may seat five, but tall adults and teenagers may find there’s not enough headroom in the rear. However, the 520 litres of boot space is plenty for a couple of large suitcases and a number of other bits and bobs. The leather interior is suitably plush too.

3. Vauxhall Astra

List price £25,615
BuyaCar price £15,550
Saving £10,065 (39.29%)

The Vauxhall Astra is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the UK, and while it’s not quite up to the standard of the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus, updates in 2019 have closed the gap considerably.

So the idea of being able to land a 2020 model for a whopping £10,000 less than you’d pay for it new is quite something: admittedly this used example has nearly 3,000 miles on the clock, but that’s a small sacrifice given the saving on offer. As a mid-level SRi Nav-trimmed car, this Astra gets more comfortable seats, automatic windscreen wipers and a 7.0-inch touchscreen media system with sat-nav, among other things.

Its 1.5-litre diesel engine is suited to longer-distance driving rather than running local errands, and you can expect to see more than 50mpg on a steady cruise. Acceleration isn’t far off what the petrol-engined Astras can achieve either, and the responsive steering makes for a satisfying drive. Add into the mix the seating for five and a decent-sized boot, and you’ve got one heck of an all-rounder for such a low price.

4. Audi A6 Allroad

List price £72,920
BuyaCar price £44,290
Saving £28,630 (39.26%)

If you’re in need of a big family estate car that can cope with some modest off-roading, the Audi A6 Allroad is a great choice. With the back seats in the upright position it’ll swallow 565 litres of stuff - which should be enough to deal with trips to the airport, camping holidays and all sorts of other adventures. Plus, it can carry five adults with ease.

It’s nowhere near as capable as a Land Rover Discovery for those who want to go far off-road, but it will take rough, muddy terrain in its stride having several welcome modifications over the standard A6: for a start, the A6 Allroad has raised suspension to provide more ground clearance, with extra cladding around the car to protect it from scrapes.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine in this 2020 model generates 234hp and plenty of low engine speed muscle, while the active air suspension is just as useful smoothing things out on the motorway as it is on bumpy fields. You might miss the very high driving position of an SUV - though the Allroad does sit higher than the standard A6 - but only until you remember the near-£30,000 saving that’s only a handful of clicks away with this Allroad.

5. Volkswagen Passat Estate

List price £31,300
BuyaCar price £19,404
Saving £11,896 (38.01%)

If you’re less adventurous than the average A6 Allroad buyer, then how about a Volkswagen Passat, which makes do without four-wheel drive and raised ride height, but offers even greater savings in exchange?

This estate car is more practical with a enormous 650-litre boot and with an official fuel economy figure of more than 50mpg coming from an admittedly less powerful diesel engine, it's cheaper to run too.

The example here may be used, but you'd barely know it, since it has only covered 10 miles, and while the SE trim is the entry-level model in the line-up, you still get an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen media system, a digital radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can hook up your phone. The interior design is clean and the inside is reassuringly spacious. All in all, this is a huge amount of car for well under £20,000. If you have a large family, you’ll love it almost as much as the 38% saving.

6. Citroen C1

List price £14,760
BuyaCar price £9,522
Saving £5,238 (35.49%)

There are plenty of drivers who don’t demand much from their cars, with small size and low costs being the two top priorities, and this is where the Citroen C1 comes in. It's cheap to buy or finance, fuel economy stands at well over 50mpg - so you shouldn't have to spend much on fuel - and it’s a doddle to drive with light steering and small dimensions.

If you want a new, comfy and affordable car, but your trips are predominantly short affairs to the shops and back, this is a great choice. Especially given that this used C1 with just 10 miles on the clock can be bought for less than £10,000 (or £141 per month), much lower than the list price of almost £15,000 and less than all but the most basic new car on sale today.

This upper-level ‘Origins’ trim is a five-door model, and you get a 7.0-inch touchscreen media system, 15-inch alloy wheels, a digital radio and several other bits of kit besides. Citroen has also had some fun with the paintwork and interior trim to make things a bit more colourful. There are more practical city cars around if you're after maximum space, but if that’s not a priority for you then don’t be put off by the small boot and lack of rear headroom compared to larger hatchbacks.

7. Peugeot 308

List price £25,895
BuyaCar price £16,891
Saving £9,004 (34.77%)

The Peugeot 308 hatchback is one of the class leaders when it comes to practicality: the boot measures 470 litres, which is the kind of space you’d normally only find in much larger types of car. It also boasts a very comfortable ride, and it handles corners very well too.

It’s not perfect of course: the driving position takes a bit of getting used to, as you look at the dials over a very small steering wheel, with some taller drivers needing to move the steering wheel down low in order to see the digital display. The touchscreen media system is also tricky to operate, and the legroom in the rear seats can be a bit of a squeeze for adults.

That said, on BuyaCar you can get a 2020 model with less than 2,000 miles on the clock for £9,000 less than the list price, making it a lot of car for the money. This example comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine capable of 0-62mph in just over 11 seconds, while the mid-spec GT Line trim includes a reversing camera and LED front fog lights.

8. Citroen C4 Cactus

List price £22,780
BuyaCar price £15,300
Saving £7,480 (32.84%)

There are plenty of SUVs that blend into the crowd, but the Citroen C4 Cactus isn’t one of them: it’s aimed at people who want something ‘a bit different’; a high-riding hatchback with quirky styling and a distinctive interior design.

That said, the Cactus still ticks all the usual boxes: the 1.2-litre petrol engine and manual gearbox on this 2020 model help it to return an excellent 61.4mpg according to the official fuel economy tests, while 0-62mph takes 9.3 seconds. The boot is a very usable 358 litres, while the inside is spacious and the ride comfort is second to none for this type of car.

You might need to spend some money at the car wash keeping the white paint on this example clean, but the beauty of buying through BuyaCar is that you won’t be short of cash thanks to a £7,480 saving on the list price.
