New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe prices and specifications revealed

BMW is extending its coupe lineup with a sleek four-door version of the 2 Series, named the 2 Series Gran Coupe that follows in the footsteps of four-door versions of the larger 4 Series, 6 Series and 8 Series coupes.

The four-door coupe is a concept that’s been a big success for BMW, as well as rivals Mercedes and Audi, which all now offer streamlined and swoopy four-door versions of their popular sporty coupe models, that feature much of the same style, but with easier access to the rear seats.

You might argue that a four-door with a boot is a saloon - a type of car that has dropped in popularity over recent decades as it lacks the practicality of a hatchback, the high driving position of an SUV or the sportiness of a coupe - but this model aims to add a little extra practicality to the two-door 2 Series Coupe, offering a sporty look and feel for drivers who need usable rear seats.

Like the rest of the Gran Coupe range, the new 2 Series version features an extra pair of doors and more rear legroom to set it apart from the two-door 2 Series Coupe.

While the 2 Series Coupe sends power to the rear wheels - in traditional BMW style - the 2 Series Gran Coupe is based upon the front-wheel drive platform of the new 1 Series hatchback, so as well as looking exactly like its hatchback stablemate from the front, the shared engineering makes it front-wheel drive as well.

Why should you care? The benefits of rear-wheel drive include good traction when accelerating and a steering wheel that never tugs in your hands when picking up speed, as no power goes to the front wheels - elements that have historically been important to BMW drivers. However, BMW believes that customers now care more about the greater rear seat space freed up by the front-wheel drive format.

 

The main point is, if you think about the 2 Series Gran Coupe as a 1 Series saloon, you’ll be close to the mark. It has been designed to compete directly with the Mercedes CLA, but with a significantly lower starting price to make sure the Mercedes feels the squeeze. If you're after the most car for your money, though, be aware than an even more stylish, larger and more powerful 2019 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe could be yours from barely £23,000.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe model range

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is a niche player, so the model range is relatively limited. In fact there are just three specification levels available, starting with the 2 Series Gran Coupe Sport, then moving up to the M Sport and the range-topping M235i xDrive. You’ll spot the entry-level model via 17-inch alloy wheels as the two higher spec cars come with 18-inch – or optional 19-inch – wheels.

The Sport’s equipment list is pretty extensive, with features such as sports seats with contrasting colour stitching, front and rear parking sensors, twin-zone climate control, BMW Connected Package Plus, BMW Live Cockpit Plus and 'Active Guard' safety kit with Lane Departure Warning that alerts you if you drift out of your lane.

The M Sport adds upgraded suspension for a sportier drive, a bodystyling kit, electric folding door mirrors, digital dials and BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control system.

The flagship M235i xDrive gets unique grey alloy wheels and grille highlights, sportier suspension, a rear spoiler, performance exhaust, a 'limited-slip differential' on the front axle - to boost how much grip the front tyres have - and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control for speedy getaways.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe engines

There are three trim levels in the new 2 Series Gran Coupe line-up, and three engine choices to go with them. The lineup kicks off with the 218i and its 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine making a reasonable 140hp. This is enough to take you from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and on to 134mph, while potentially also returning a remarkably economical 56.5mpg with CO2 emissions as low as 114g/km. This means you shouldn't have to fill up often and company car tax bills should be surprisingly low, too.

When it comes to fuel economy, though, the 2.0-litre diesel 220d will appeal even more. It has a substantial 190hp and loads of low-down muscle meaning 0-62mph can be completed in just 7.5 seconds while the top speed is 146mph. That’s pretty impressive for a car that will also return up to 67.3mpg with CO2 emissions from 110g/km.

The Gran Coupe M235i xDrive is powered by BMW’s most potent four-cylinder engine which produces a hefty 306hp. With the extra grip of its standard four-wheel drive system, the M235i races from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and on to 155mph. Driven a little slower than that, it can also return up to 42.2mpg.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe design

While it’s branded as one of the 2 Series models, it's the new 1 Series hatchback that the Gran Coupe is more closely related to. In fact the hatch and the new four-door look very similar when viewed from the front end, and the two cars really only diverge from a design point of view when you get to the extra doors and the addition of a boot – a feature that’s highlighted by Gran Coupe-specific wide rear lights. Incidentally, both head- and taillights are LEDs for greater light output.

At the front, the Gran Coupe gets contoured bars in the traditional BMW grille, while frameless door windows accentuate the ‘coupe’ effect when the car is viewed from the side.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is 4,526mm long and 1,800mm wide, with a relatively low roof height of 1,420mm. It’s smaller than a 3 Series saloon, however the long 2,670mm distance between front and rear wheels ensures space is reasonable for passengers inside.

The interior of the 2 Series Gran Coupe is identical to the 1 Series, so you get the same very easy-to-use dashboard and control layout, and the same 8.8-inch media system display – upgraded to 10.3 inches on M Sport and the M235i, which also gets BMW’s high-tech digital dials. There’s a rotary controller between the seats for the media system, but you also get touchscreen and voice control as well.

The fit and finish is typically upmarket, with additional touches like ambient lighting you can customise with six colours and adjustable brightness. On a more practical note, the rear passengers get an extra 33mm of knee room compared to the 2 Series Coupe, while the rear seat is 12mm higher with 14mm more headroom. The 430-litre boot is also 40 litres bigger than the Coupe’s boot, while the rear seat splits and folds 40:20:20 and can be released from the load area.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe equipment

While we’ve listed key equipment above by trim level, it’s worth exploring some of the technology aboard the 2 Series Gran Coupe in a bit more detail.

There is an array of driver assistance systems, and standard specification includes collision and pedestrian warnings with an automatic city braking function. You also get Lane Departure warning with corrective steering - for keeping you in your lane safely -as well as active cruise control that brakes for slower traffic ahead.

Lane Change Warning is part of the optional Driving Assistant pack, which also includes rear collision and cross traffic warnings, as well as stop and go cruise control. Optional Parking Assistant will park you automatically in spaces that are parallel or perpendicular to the road, while Reversing Assistant will drive you backwards for up to 50 metres along the exact route you just drove forwards. It’s ideal for reversing in multi-storey car parks, or even backing up in narrow country lanes if you find yourself at a dead end or approaching traffic on a single track road.

All 2 Series Gran Coupes get 'BMW Live Cockpit Plus' which includes a 'Touch Controller' - letting you write in instructions with your finger on the rotary controller - a sat-nav system and a wi-fi interface. 'Live Cockpit Professional' on ‘M’ models includes a digital customisable instrument display, plus a bigger dashboard display screen and the latest BMW operating system. This brings improved menus and graphics, as well as a touchpad and voice control options.

The standard sound system includes six-speakers and a 100-watt amplifier, while a 16-speaker, 464-watt Harman Kardon upgrade is available too if you spend more.

Other optional extras include a head-up display that projects crucial driving info onto the windscreen in front of the driver, BMW Digital Key that allows Samsung Galaxy smartphone users to unlock their car by holding their phone to the door handle, and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant voice controls that respond to commands if you say ‘Hey BMW’.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe review

While we havent yet had the chance to get behind the wheel, we expect the 2 Series Gran Coupe to feel much like the 1 Series on which it is based – the extra length and weight of the Gran Coupe is unlikely to affect handling or ride comfort significantly.

It will likely feel a little different to the rear-wheel drive 2 Series Coupe though, but we’ll have to wait and see whether the front-drive four-door is measurably less – or perhaps measurably more – fun than the two-door out on the road.
