New electric Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV

Ford has announced an electric Mustang and called it the Mach-E. But it's not exactly what you'd expect

Ford has taken the radical step of launching its latest electric car under the iconic Mustang nameplate. Its full title is Ford Mustang Mach-E and is a crossover rather than a sports coupe like all Mustangs that came before. The Mach-E is expected to boast up to 370 miles worth of range and a total power output of up to 459hp. First deliveries are due to arrive in the latter parts of 2020.

Here in Europe, Ford isn’t exactly leading the pack when it comes to hybrid and fully-electric cars, but the American car giant has ambitious plans to change this which involve bringing more than 14 electrified vehicles to the European market by the end of 2020.

When looking at the Mustang Mach-E it seems that Ford could well have the upper hand over many rivals (on paper at least). None of the alternatives from the likes of Hyundai, Kia, Audi or Jaguar come close to offering the same levels of battery range the Mach-E is expected to bring.

At the same time, there are some 30 new all-electric cars due in 2020 with battery-powered SUVs such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW iX3 and Volvo XC40 Recharge all set to pose a threat to Mach-E sales. Expected starting prices for these alternatives range from £50,000 to £70,000, though, so where this new Ford Mustang sits in the range will be vital.

Whilst a big battery pack and impressive range are good, Ford knows buyers these days demand cutting edge technology such as large touchscreen media and information screens. For this reason, the Mach-E will premiere Ford’s next-generation SYNC system – which is then expected to appear in other Ford models of the future.

2020 electric Ford Mustang Mach-E specs

Ford is yet to confirm its entire trim range for the Mach-E, however, it has stated that a limited-run First Edition model will be available from launch with a more potent performance version - pegged as the Mustang Mach-E GT - set to arrive at a later date.

As for the rest of the range, buyers will have to select from rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Mach-E models, and all-wheel-drive (AWD) Mach-E models. Both RWD and AWD models have the option of standard and extended range battery packs.

First Edition models are all-wheel-drive with an extended range battery pack, which come with a handful of goodies such as a full-length panoramic roof, exclusive Grabber Blue paint and scuff plates (the bits of trim at the bottom of a door opening when you get into a car) with “First Edition” marked on them.

When it comes to standard equipment included on RWD Mustang Mach-E models, Ford has confirmed that wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), LED taillights and 18-inch alloy wheels will feature. AWD models come with an extra electric motor, red brake callipers, adaptive LED headlights, electric folding mirrors and larger 19-inch alloy wheels.

As for delivery dates, Ford is currently allowing motorists to make reservations for all of the above Mach-E variants with deliveries expected to start during the latter parts of 2020. Those motorists who opt for First Edition models are expected to get priority slots on the manufacturing line, so if you want your Mustang Mach-E as soon as possible, this would be the one to go for.

Performance and economy vary depending on which battery pack is fitted (either standard or extended range) and also whether a Mach-E is AWD or RWD. Starting with the rear-wheel-drive models, those fitted with the standard battery pack boast 254hp, 415Nm of torque and a 0-62mph time of under eight seconds. For the same vehicles, Ford is targeting an economy of 16.5kWh per 100 km (or 62 miles). For those a little unsure of what electric car economy is, take a read of our dedicated explainer.

Rear-wheel-drive models with the larger battery pack get a hike in performance as well as range. Power comes in at 281hp and torque at 415Nm. Despite the extra power, 0-62mph is expected to take just under eight seconds, while the targeted economy is also no different at 16.5kWh per 100 km.

Those looking at AWD models have a mixture of advantages and disadvantages when it comes to performance. Standard range all-wheel-drive models come with the same power output of their RWD equivalents (254hp) but torque is a lofty 565Nm. Such an increase is expected to bring a 0-62mph time of under seven seconds. Economy takes a hit though, with Ford targeting 17.9kWh per 100 km.

Extended range AWD models offer the most power and torque of the non-GT Mach-Es thanks to an expected power output of 332hp and 565Nm of torque. Despite the impressive numbers, 0-62mph is pegged to come in just under seven seconds, i.e. the same as standard range AWD models. Target economy is 18.1kWh per 100km.

Finally, there is the performance Mustang Mach-E GT model, which, Ford is claiming will come with around 457hp and 830Nm of torque. The American carmaker believes numbers like this should make 0-62mph possible in under five seconds, however, corresponding economy figures are yet to be released.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E range

Depending on the model opted for, claimed range varies from 260 to 370 miles. Queen of the crop is rear-wheel-drive extended range models, as these are the only variants which are set come with the headline 370 miles from a single charge.

The next best claimed mileage from a full battery comes from extended range AWD models which boast 335 miles. To connect the dots, this is the range First Edition models are expected to come with. Going down another step on the range ladder reveals rear-wheel-drive standard range models which claim 280 miles from a single charge.

Rounding off the list are all-wheel-drive standard range models which are due to come with 260 miles of range. As a note, all these figures are quoted under WLTP conditions, which is the most up to date (and realistic) economy and range testing procedure available.

Ford has yet to officially confirm charge times but has said the maximum input Mach-E models will be able to handle is 150kW. Further to this, Ford has stated that the standard battery pack is 75.7kWh in size and the extended battery 98.9kWh. Such battery sizes translate to full charges costing around £10.60 and £13.85 respectively, assuming 14p per kWh of electricity (which is roughly the average price of a kWh of electricity here in the UK).

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E rivals and alternatives

While the number of direct rivals to the Mustang Mach-E is currently rather small, there is a surprising number of alternatives that are slightly more or slightly less expensive than the Ford. Those cheaper than the Mustang include Hyundai’s Kona and Kia’s e-Niro, which both promise around 280 miles of range and starting prices in the mid-£30,000s.

On the flip side, for a little bit more money electric cars such as the Jaguar I Pace, Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC are available. These all sit at the more luxurious end of the electric car market and come with around 250 miles of range (the Jag actually has around 290 miles).

In 2020, the UK electric car market is set to explode with around 30 new all-electric cars expected to arrive.

Yet, despite the tsunami of UK-bound models, there are still few direct rivals expected to come in at the same price point as Ford’s Mustang Mach-E. Perhaps the closest rival (in terms of price at least) is the all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge which is due to land in spring 2020 and is expected to start in the high-£40,000s.

Outside of that, Audi is launching two all-electric SUVs called the Q4 e-tron and e-tron Sportback – neither of which are expected to give any change from £60,000. Tesla, Peugeot and Vauxhall are all launching battery-powered SUVs in 2020, but, as these are expected to start in the mid-£30,000s they will likely undercut the Mustang – or at least they will in entry-level spec.

Like many carmakers producing electric vehicles, Ford is loading the Mustang Mach-E with as many bells and whistles as possible. For starters, buyers can use their phones as a key. This system works via Bluetooth, so motorists don’t even need to touch their phone to get in and start their car.

Ford has said that the Mach-E will be available with a keypad on the side of the car (a feature repeated on the central touchscreen display inside) which will allow owners to unlock and start their car should their phone battery go flat.

On a more mechanical note, Ford will offer the Mach-E with MagneRide, which is a rather fancy suspension system which can adapt to the road surface. Complementing this are three different driving modes – named Whisper, Engage and Unbridled. Although these names are slightly ambiguous, they are likely to revolve around comfort, eco and sports configurations for the Mach-E’s steering, throttle and suspension settings. Naturally, a BuyaCar review will follow in due course to confirm as much.

Perhaps the biggest bit of technology set to feature on the new Mach-E is Ford’s next-generation SYNC information and media system. This revolves around a large 15.5-inch central touchscreen display which includes controls for everything from satellite navigation to what music is playing. This system also includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. Further to this, a digital drivers’ instrumentation cluster is available.

Ford appears to be going for a very modern and minimalist interior with the Mach-E. Buttons and switches are rare as hens’ teeth with the central touchscreen display mentioned above expected to handle the bulk of the cabin’s controls. There is a decent smattering of steering wheel buttons, though, which should act as useful shortcuts for drivers.

It is the exterior though, which will likely raise the most eyebrows. Looking at the front and rear, familiarities with the coupe Mustang are very much apparent thanks to crisp slanted head and taillights plus a long swooping bonnet. From the side though, things get a little harder to love, mostly due to the fact that the Mach-E is higher and longer than the coupe it is related to.

Ford has tried to disguise this growth in size by cleverly colouring the roof black and bringing the red sides down at a smoother angle... we won't be so easily fooled.

As for exterior colours, Ford is offering a total of eight, unless you exclude the Grabber Blue hue exclusive to First Edition models. Standard colours include red, black, white, grey and a bluish-grey.

Ford has yet to reveal the Mustang Mach-E’s dimensions but has revealed luggage capacity. With the rear seats up there is a total of 402 litres of boot space but fold them down and this increases up to 1,420 litres. Adding to this is a 100-litre luggage compartment under the bonnet, which is drainable making it perfect for grubby gear owners don’t want in the cabin.

The Mustang we know and love wasn't exactly a small car, so expect at least some growth in terms of height, but we'll see just what its footprint is like when we get to meet one in the flesh.
