Renault introduces five-year warranty

Renault has launched a new five-year, 100,000-mile warranty, applying to all 2020-on models, so its new cars are now covered until 2025

Renault has launched a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty for all new cars sold in the UK. This means that any Renault registered on or after 18 December 2019 will be covered by a five-year manufacturer's warranty – good news if you’re buying a used car in 2020.

The one exception is the all-new Renault Clio. All examples of the fifth-generation Clio are covered by the five-year warranty, regardless of the date of registration. Renault’s new and extended warranty covers fleet and retail cars and features an unlimited mileage limit in the first two years. The 100,000-mile cap is applied to the final three years.

One of the downsides of buying some cars second-hand is that the remaining warranty could be limited - especially if you go for a car with a run-of-the-mill three-year warranty. When you consider that a typical PCP finance deal lasts three to four years, a standard manufacturer’s warranty could have run out before some cars come back on to the second-hand market. With a five-year warranty, however, you'd have a very valuable two years' cover left if you purchased a three-year old car. That's more than enough time to get any issues seen to.

The three-year breakdown recovery package also offered by Renault remains unchanged, with a 100,000-mile limit for electric cars and the Koleos SUV, and a 60,000-mile limit for all other models.

What’s covered by Renault’s five-year warranty?

It’s worth noting that Renault’s range of light commercial vehicles remain covered by a three-year warranty. The five-year warranty only applies to the manufacturer's cars, a range including the Clio, Megane, Captur, Kadjar, Grand Scenic and Koleos. Renault’s electric vehicles are also covered, but more on this in the next section.

There are some items aren’t covered by the full five-year warranty, however:

  • Wiper blades: 6 months/6,000 miles
  • Bulbs (headlights/indicators/brake lights): 12 months/12,000 miles
  • Brake pads: 24 months/6,000 miles
  • Shock absorbers/brake discs/drums: 24 months/12,000 miles
  • Clutch: 24 months/24,000 miles
  • Battery: 36 months/60,000 miles
  • Interior (dashboard/steering wheel/trim/seats/Bluetooth): 36 months/60,000 miles

Renault’s paintwork warranty, meanwhile, covers the car for three years.

Five-year warranty for Renault electric cars

Although Renault’s electric cars are covered by the five-year/100,000-mile warranty, there are some limitations.

For example, the electric battery on the Zoe is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Meanwhile, the batteries on the Kangoo and Master are covered for five years or 100,000 miles. Some parts are also subject to the same time limits as laid out above.

To maintain the warranty, Renault insists that the car is serviced in accordance with the schedule laid out in the vehicle handbook. You risk invalidating the warranty if you make modifications to the vehicle, meanwhile, fit non-genuine parts and/or fail to keep up with the service schedule.

Getting a Renault with a five-year warranty

With the exception of the all-new Clio, for which the warranty will be backdated to the date of registration, a Renault must have been registered on or after 18 December 2019 to benefit from five years of cover. Purchase a used Renault registered in January 2020 and it will still be covered in 2025.

Should you decide to sell the car before 2025, the warranty can be transferred to the new owner, who will be covered for the remainder of the warranty period. This should deliver peace of mind to subsequent buyers and boost used values, which in turn should contribute to lower monthly payments if you take PCP finance.
