Are you stuck wondering about the best way to purchase your next car? There are many more options than there used to be. You don't just have to pay straight up with a large amount of cash anymore; in fact you'd be among a very small minority if you did.

Generally, more and more people are now choosing to go down the route of car finance, because it's simply a more affordable alternative. Better still, it's possible to get a finance deal on used cars, too, with some very affordable options on the table.

Used car finance is a way of spreading the cost of a car over an extended period of time. It basically allows you to drive away in your new car today, instead of having to go away for ten years and save up thousands of pounds. There is much more to it than that, but you can check out our expert car finance guides for more details.

Choosing your next car is a significant decision, and getting the best possible value for money is an important part of that. By finding the right finance deal, you can tailor your agreement and make some pretty substantial savings compared to if you had paid the cash price. You'll find yourself shopping for some of the best used car deals around, rather than settling for a cheap old banger.

By splitting the cost up into a series of monthly payments, you'll find you're able to get the keys to a much more exciting list of cars than you might expect. Whether you need to haul a whole family on long road trips in a Skoda Octavia Estate, whizz around town on shopping errands in a Volkswagen Up, or make any excuse you can to head for your favourite quiet country road in a BMW 3 Series, a finance deal can often help to achieve those aspirations and a whole lot more to boot.

Read on for our pick of the 10 best used car finance deals available right now on BuyaCar.

Used car finance deals under £100 per month

1. VW Up

Used deals from £7,750
Monthly finance from £0*

Volkswagen has a reputation for producing sensible and well-built cars and it's smallest model on offer, the Volkswagen Up, blends all that with cheeky city car looks. Its small size makes it brilliant fun to drive, but most importantly, it's incredibly cheap on finance.

The fact you can get a car that's this well put together, with decent steering and plenty of kit for less than £100 per month is pretty exceptional. Sure, you'll be looking at models from around 2016, but you'll still be getting air-conditioning and DAB digital radio and a car that is very enjoyable to drive.

The fact that there’s a surprising amount of room inside is the icing on the cake, especially when you couple that with the fact the compact VW Up will be easy to park and easy to drive in congested city centres.

2. Smart ForFour

Used deals from £6,995
Monthly finance from £0*

Most tiny city cars only have three doors - the Smart ForFour has five. This makes it one of the more practical small cars you can buy, if only for the ease in which you can access the rear seats.

That being said, you won't have much space to squeeze into, the Smart is a very small car, but as the name suggests there is just about room for four people inside. Which is good, because it means more people can appreciate the ForFour's quirky interior design.

If you want to stand out for not much outlay, this is a good bet, as you can also get some pretty whacky exterior colour schemes as well. The Smart remains a unique choice, which is relatively good value as a used car purchase.

3. Mini Cooper

Used deals from £9,900
Monthly finance from £0*

If you're looking for a small hatchback that's fun to drive and eager to put a smile on your face, the Mini Cooper is possibly the perfect choice. While it's existence in the 21st century is contentious - it's not particularly mini anymore - there's no denying it has maintained the charm of the original Mini while delivering a much more refined and high-quality experience.

That's not to say it's been watered down in any way. The Mini still feels small from behind the wheel, with eager and responsive handling and plenty of grip to hurl it around corners. As far as driving is concerned, there are few rivals that can match it.

Just like the outside, the interior is retro-tastic, with a circular screen surround that dominates the dashboard, and toggle switches inspired by the original Fifties Mini. The whole thing feels like it’s made from top-quality materials, too. This version of the Mini is best for two people, though, as the rear seats are cramped and boot space is limited.

4. Skoda Octavia Estate

Used deals from £13,000
Monthly finance from £0*

One thing dominates your experience of a Skoda Octavia Estate is just how big the boot is. It makes rivals such as the Ford Focus Estate or Volkswagen Golf Estate look small, and they too are pretty big in the grand scheme of things.

There’s plenty of space for people, too. And you can keep them entertained and comfortable thanks to generous equipment levels across the range. That includes Bluetooth for connecting your phone and climate control to keep the interior at just the right temperature – as standard on even the most basic models. The Octavia won’t cost the earth to run either, especially if you opt for a frugal diesel engine.

5. BMW 3 Series

Used deals from £14,000
Monthly finance from £0*

Small upmarket saloons are primarily designed to deliver a classy yet sporty driving experience. None are quite as classy, or as sporty, as the BMW 3 Series. We’ve picked the previous-generation version here rather than the all-new model, as there are loads of them to choose from, and you tend to get a better bang for your buck.

Relatively un-used petrol or diesel models are available for less than £300 per month, but it's hard to beat the efficient, smooth and quiet 320d as an all-round choice. However, if you do fewer than 12,000 miles per year you might be better off in the impressively zippy 320i petrol.

6. Mercedes E-Class

Used deals from £23,199
Monthly finance from £0*

The Mercedes E-Class is popular among professional chauffeurs, and it’s easy to understand why. Aside from its practicalities - there is plenty of boot and interior space, and even more if you opt for the cavernous estate version - it’s beautifully built, and hugely relaxing to drive. The quality of the interior makes the E-Class such a satisfying car to drive that a longer journeys fly by in peaceful comfort.

Go for a current generation (2017 or newer) saloon car in base SE specification. This has plenty of equipment, but nothing fancy like ash wood inside or big alloy wheels on the outside. The diesel engined E250d is the one to pick – the cheaper and more frugal E220d is too slow for most people.

7. BMW i3

Used deals Limited stock

The BMW i3 was part of the initial flurry of new electric cars that arrived in the early 2010s. It was the first electric car produced by BMW and it offered a different view of what an electric car could be. With bold and futuristic styling, and a wide open interior, the i3 was different to virtually everything else on the market - that remains true today.

It's available as a purely-electric car or as a hybrid option with a tiny petrol engine designed to charge the battery on the move when it begins to run low and extend overall range. The theoretical range of the electric i3 is 188 miles, while the range extender officially brings this up to 276 miles. Real world figures will be less, mind you.

8. Range Rover Evoque

Used deals from £19,940
Monthly finance from £0*

The relatively small – and affordable – Range Rover Evoque brought the desirable Range Rover badge into the reach of a much wider markert. Although it’s not as luxurious or capable off-road as its bigger brother, the littlest Range Rover looks just as much the part on the road. The luxury feel is still there, too, even at this reduced price - you still have access to heated seats and climate control, while the overall quality of the interior is extremely high.

Like the full-size Range Rover, petrol-engined versions are thirsty, so we’d opt for a diesel engine if money and fuel saving is on the agenda – their popularity means there are lots more of those available on the used market, too.

9. Volvo XC90

Used deals from £29,500
Monthly finance from £0*

Big SUVs don’t come much safer than the Volvo XC90. Yet these seven-seated beasts are also stylish, refined, comfortable, and quiet. It’s a pretty compelling choice if you’re after a large used luxury SUV. That’s still true, despite the current model having been around since 2015. Of course, that means there are plenty of examples to choose from, which helps keep costs down.

Momentum trim cars offer a great level of spec for the money. All XC90s come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive.

10. Honda Civic Type R

Used deals from £28,490
Monthly finance from £0*

It ain't subtle, but it is an awful lot of fun. Underneath the crazy wings and origami styling creases lies a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that makes 316bhp. That’s the sort of power you’d have got in a Porsche 911 15 years ago.

Then there’s the trick adaptive suspension. Honda’s engineers have somehow made the Type R’s suspension fairly pliant (for a hot hatch at least) around town, yet extremely planted and sporting when let loose on winding roads.
