The Volkswagen Polo is a massively popular supermini icon, and with a reputation for great build quality, reliability and practicality, it’s been a model that other brands have measured their own offerings against for years. That said, many Polo rivals are household names in their own right, with popular models such as the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Micra, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa amongst the those up against it.

Plenty of less established alternatives are available in the segment, too, offering potential Polo buyers even more food for thought. The Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Mazda 2, Peugeot 208, Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia are all worth considering if you’re looking for a sensible but desirable small car.

Wherever you look, though, it’s hard to deny the VW Polo its place at the top end of the small car tree. The latest generation has reaffirmed this by combining an appealing ‘big car feel’ behind the wheel, high quality fit and finish in its comfy cabin, and all the practicality and space you could wish for in such a small package. The fact that the latest version looks a lot like the larger VW Golf is a bonus, as is the reputation of the solid engineering that goes with that VW badge.

There’s only a five-door version available these days, but there’s a Polo trim level to suit every taste and pocket. It’s bang-up-to-date as far as safety is concerned, and has an amazing array of optional technology, the likes of which you’d really only expect to find in bigger models. Features like self-parking, a configurable digital dashboard and a panoramic sunroof would have been impressive in a range-topping limo just a few years ago.

Of course if you choose a top-spec Volkswagen Polo it’s going to cost a bit more than a budget version, but the availability of fab finance deals goes a long way to soften the blow. To help you out, we’ve rounded up the best deals around for all the different trim levels, and with 1013 cars available on BuyaCar with prices starting from just £118 a month, finance on a Polo really can be very affordable. Read on for the best VW Polo deals around.

2019 VW Polo PCP deals

VW Polo S deals

The latest VW Polo S is the entry-level model that looks anything but basic, and its appeal is underpinned by a comprehensive safety package that includes forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring - which can slam the brakes on if it thinks you’re going to crash - a speed limiter, driver alert system and automatic headlamps. You also get stability control and tyre pressure monitoring, triple rear seatbelts and twin rear Isofix mounts for kiddie seats.

Inside you get an eight-inch touchscreen to operate the music system, plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity for an iPod or MP3 player plus a DAB radio and CD player with six-speaker set-up. You’ll be cool as a cucumber with manual air-conditioning fitted as standard, but the 14-inch steel wheels and black plastic door mirrors won’t do your street-cred much good.

The only engine is a 1.0-litre petrol with 80hp, which means a relatively sluggish 15.5-second 0-62mph time, but insurance and running costs for a Polo don’t come much cheaper than this.

VW Polo SE deals

Moving up to SE trim is an attractive option for anyone who wants to stay connected, thanks to VW’s Car-Net ‘App-Connect’ which allows you to mirror your smartphone apps on the eight-inch colour touchscreen. The onboard computer is upgraded with extra features too, and comfort is enhanced with all-round electric windows and electrically adjustable mirrors, and plusher interior fabric with a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

You’ll also be rolling on 15-inch alloy wheels and showing off your painted door mirrors with indicator repeaters, while engine choices include a punchier 95hp 1.0-litre, which you can also get with VW’s impressively slick ‘DSG’ automatic gearbox. With all that in mind, it’s fair to say the VW Polo in SE trim level provides the best balance of affordability and comfort.

VW Polo Beats deals

VW calls this Beats version a special edition rather than a trim level, but whatever you call it the Polo Beats turns heads – and ears - thanks to the thumping Beats audio system it comes with. Consisting on an eight-channel amplifier, digital sound-processor and a subwoofer in the boot for added bass, you won't be wanting for volume with one of these.

It’s not all about the music though, as the Polo Beats also comes with sharp 16-inch alloys, dark tinted glass and a distinctive stripe along the bonnet and roof. The interior is upgraded too, with front sports seats and Beats logos on the door sills.

VW Polo R-Line deals

The Polo R-Line trim level switches the focus to sporty styling, so if that’s your thing you’ll want to check out the R-Line styling pack with more aggressive detailing for the front and rear bumpers, as well as the 16-inch grey alloy wheels and LED rear light clusters.

It’s also a chance to get your hands on one of the more powerful standard Polo engines, as R-Line models come with the 115hp version of VW’s turbocharged 1.0-litre engine, which is also available in a less powerful 95hp format. If you want to go any faster, you’ll need the Polo GTI hot hatch.

VW Polo SEL deals

If cruising in luxury is what you seek from your small car, then the VW Polo SEL should provide everything you could ask for.

The eight-inch touchscreen media system gets an upgrade to include VW’s Discover Navigation system, while Car-Net ‘Guide and Inform’ brings you access to local traffic conditions, fuel prices and news feeds.

The cabin also gains a twin-zone climate control system - perfect if you’re always fighting with your passenger to set the temperature - while other luxuries include front fog lights that swivel as you turn, plus automatic rain-sensing windscreen wipers.

VW Polo GTI deals

A properly punchy 2.0-litre 200hp engine coupled to VW’s six-gear automatic DSG gearbox means there’s plenty of fun to be had behind the wheel of a VW Polo GTI model. It takes a rapid 6.7 seconds to sprint from 0-62mph and although the Polo GTI lacks a bit of the fun factor of some of its more exciting rivals - that automatic gearbox makes it feel less engaging to drive - it delivers very grown-up performance and tonnes of all-round ability.

The Polo GTI sits 15mm closer to the ground on lowered sports suspension, and has the grip and stability to cling onto the road around corners like a limpet.

There’s plenty to enjoy even when you’re not using all the performance, as the Polo GTI comes with bespoke tartan interior fabrics and a sporty leather trimmed steering wheel with red stitching. There are also four selectable driving modes, and of course there’s a GTI bodykit with aggressive bumpers and big black honeycomb grill for a sporty look.

VW Polo GTI+ deals

Want the fastest, glitziest VW Polo? This is it. Take one standard GTI, and throw in special wheels, LED headlamps and an array of the latest technology to make a genuine ‘halo’ car at the top of the Polo line-up and you get the GTI+.

Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control - which maintains a safe distance behind the car in front when cruising - even if that car slows down or speeds up - keyless entry with a start/stop button, and VW’s Active Info Display digital dash, which replaces the standard dials with a big 10.3-inch customisable digital display.

At £23,160 for a new one before you’ve added any extras, the price of the GTI+ makes buying a used model on finance a distinctly sensible proposition. Or of course, you could choose a nearly-new or used version to get all that car for a far more affordable price.
