Great value used car deals

1. Mercedes A-Class

Used deals from £9,900
Monthly finance from £231

The Mercedes A-Class is now in its fourth generation and offers one of the most compelling mixes of refinement and technology of any hatchback on sale here in the UK. While the core model range consists of SE, Sport and AMG Line trims, there are two performance versions on offer as well – the Mercedes-AMG A 35 and Mercedes-AMG A 45 S.

It is the standard models we are focusing on here thanks to the lower running costs they bring (mostly due to frugal petrol and diesel engines) and more comfortable ride. On the subject of engines, those available are, in general, impressive, with standout motors including the 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol.

These days you can’t mention a relatively new Mercedes without mentioning the German brand’s impressive MBUX information and media system. With MBUX installed drivers are faced with two 10.3-inch screens that display everything from speed to what radio station is playing.

It gets cleverer still, with the navigation system able to project instructions onto the windscreen making it look as though they are being displayed on the road ahead. It is worth noting that not all models come with the MBUX, so make sure you know what you are buying beforehand.

2. Peugeot 3008

Latest model used deals from £14,800
Monthly finance from £240

In a market packed with small and medium-sized SUVs and crossovers, the Peugeot 3008 is one of the few which stand out amongst the crowd. How has the French manufacturer achieved such a feat? By offering the 3008 with a smart interior, efficient engines and decent levels of refinement.

The good news doesn’t end there, either, thanks to a practical cabin that offers enough luggage and passenger space for most families, provided they don’t want or need more than five seats that is.

Core trims consist of Active, Allure, GT Line, GT Line Premium and GT – which is best to go for will depend on how many goodies buyers want, but unless absolutely necessary there is little reward for slumming it with an entry-level Active model.

Modern-day Peugeots feature something called i-Cockpit. This means you get a small steering wheel (so you can see the drivers’ dials above rather than through the wheel) and massively de-cluttered dashboard design. Compared to some Peugeot models i-Cockpit works surprisingly well in the 3008 so don’t let a bit of French funkiness put you off.

3. Mazda MX-5

Used deals from £9,995
Monthly finance from £0

Imagine cruising along your favourite country road with the wind blowing through your hair. All you need is a Mazda MX-5 and that scenario could easily become a reality.

Part of the fact Mazda's MX-5 is the most popular drop-top sports car of all time is because it is surprisingly easy to live with, provided you don’t need more than two seats. Another contributing factor to its success is the fact Mazda found a winning formula and stuck to it. This is, modest power output, sent to the rear wheels, in a car that handles excellently, weighs very little and boasts small proportions.

There are myriad trims to choose from but opt for SE-L Nav+ models and you should find no reason to be disappointed. There are two engines to choose from, a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre, both are great options but those wanting the best economy should go for the smaller engine and those wanting more power should go for the larger unit.

On top of delivering well with driving thrills, all models deliver decent levels of trim – entry-level SE models come with air-conditioning, electric windows and LED headlights. There is even a hard-top MX-5 called the MX-5 RF, which brings coupe styling to the small Japanese roadster.

4. Volvo V60

Used deals from £9,500
Monthly finance from £468

We think this is one of the best estates currently on sale – the stunning Volvo V60.

It isn’t just a pretty face, though, it's practical too, and packed with tech and well-built. Unlike some of its rivals which focus more on driver involvement, Volvo decided to ensure the V60 majors on comfort, which, let’s face it, is what a lot of drivers want. Smart people, them there Volvo employees.

Possibly the hardest decision for V60 buyers is which engine to buy, there are petrols, diesels and even a plug-in hybrid which offer performance ranging from adequate to frankly ridiculous (perhaps surprising to some, it is the hybrid which comes with the most stomach-turning performance).

In addition to this, modern-day Volvos come in a couple of flavours and picking the right one could make or break a car ownership experience. As all models come well equipped entry-level Momentum variants are nothing to be sniffed at, but sporty-looking R-Design spec does give the V60 a certain je ne sais quoi.

5. Land Rover Discovery Sport

Used deals from £18,297
Monthly finance from £363

Winter is here, and it's bound to bring some icy weather. When road conditions get slippery many motorists like the reassurance of a proper four-wheel-drive – especially if they are transporting precious cargo such as children or other priceless artefacts.

Few car brands can touch Land Rover for off-road prowess and few Land Rover vehicles are as easy to live with as the Discovery Sport. A word of warning when shopping around, not all Discovery Sport models are four-wheel-drive so make sure you double-check your potential purchase comes with off-road credentials before handing over your hard-earned cash.

Seven-seat models are available with petrol or diesel engines, although petrols are significantly less common. One thing buyers seem to appreciate with the Discovery Sport is the fact it feels both built to handle a tough life and premium at the same time.

Further to this, all models come as standard with strong levels of equipment, including heated seats, climate control, alloy wheels and Bluetooth. That said, SE Tech models are one of the best models in the range (when balancing spec and cost) bring automatic lights and wipers, plus an electric tailgate which although some won’t like to admit, doesn’t half helps take the edge off loading your car with lots of cargo.
