Best used BMW 2 Series Coupe PCP deals and finance offers 2020

This sporty BMW is a great starting point for drivers after a cool coupe – especially when used models are available from £150 a month

This is the BMW 2 Series, a small coupe that comes is a vast range of guises, from economy-focused diesels up to super-powerful sports cars. With the engine situated at the front, but powering the rear-wheels, BMW has often referred to this compact car as the ultimate driving machine. If you enjoy driving, you'll value having precise steering while sitting in a car that delivers true sporting performance in a high-quality and relaxed environment.

At this point, you may imagine that a BMW coupe is probably jolly expensive and you should pick a different car – but not so fast. The BMW 2 Series Coupe has been on sale since 2014, with a facelift in 2017 helping to keep it fresh, which means there is plenty of choice on the used car market and that you may be able to find one for much less than you might think.

A quick search on BuyaCar will show how you can get your hands on one of these four-seat coupes from as little as £10,000. That will be for one of the oldest models that may have covered plenty of miles, but budget closer to £15,000 and it’s surprising just how much car you’ll get for your money. Alternatively, there are great deals on nearly-new examples, as a new 1 Series has just gone on sale and a new 2 Series isn't far off, meaning lower prices for this version.

There are some tempting alternatives, though. Cars including the Audi TT, Volkswagen Scirocco and even the slightly leftfield Toyota GT86 (which comes with a five-year warranty from new, remember) are on the used market, while you could also consider the big brother to the 2 Series, the BMW 4 Series, given that models are available from around £14,000 on BuyaCar.

The BMW 2 Series

The good thing about the 2 Series is that it’s a compact package on the outside with four proper seats inside. So when you need to carry rear passengers over the age of six, they will fit quite comfortably provided they're not way over six feet tall – unlike in an Audi TT which is decidedly horrible for any adult asked to sit in the back seats. And the 390-litre boot is a good size for this type of car, too.

In the front, the offset pedals, which are positioned slightly to the right of the seat, take a little getting used to for some drivers. But the rest of the layout is straightforward and comfortable, and you can set the seat nice and low for a sporty feel. Yet at the same time, even if you need to drive from the south of England to the north of Scotland it is perfectly relaxing.

Another big selling point for the 2 Series is its slick media system. Many of the car’s functions are controlled through the system's rotary wheel, located in front of the gearstick which is very intuitive to use and means you don't have to prod away at the screen to change settings - something which can prove very distracting when driving in many modern cars. The sat-nav itself is dependable, too, offer clear instructions and onscreen graphics.

The range currently offers the choice of three petrol engines and two diesel units. One of those petrols is the six-cylinder, turbocharged motor from the M240i, and it’s a belter: super powerful, beautiful sounding and surprisingly economical when driving gently. The other two petrols are four-cylinder units that are nice enough, but the diesels could be quieter than they are, and it’s a shame that the higher-powered version of the diesel engine is the only one available with four-wheel drive.

BMW also offers a convertible version of the 2 Series and it pretty much shares its engine and trim range with the coupe. Here are the key differences between the trim levels and quick links to some of the great deals available on BuyaCar.

BMW 2 Series SE PCP offers

The 2 Series range kicks off with SE, though this is hardly basic. Even the very cheapest new 2 Series costs more than £25,700, though go for a nearly-new or used example and you could save a small fortune.

Every model comes with BMW Efficient Dynamics, a package of hardware and software that’s designed to make the car more fuel efficient. That includes an engine stop-start system, brake energy regeneration, Eco Pro driving mode for better economy, a gearshift indicator and tyres with low rolling resistance.

You get cloth seats, plus LED lights, parking sensors for the back of the car, automatic operation of the lights and wipers, manual air-conditioning, folding rear seats (something not all saloons or coupes like this offer), run-flat tyres, Bluetooth hands-free smartphone integration, a sat-nav system, a basic digital audio system and a set of 17-inch alloy wheels.

When browsing used stock, look out for cars fitted with desirable options packs. These include Comfort Pack I, with folding and anti-dazzle mirrors, heated front seats and climate control, or Comfort Pack II, with a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and electric front seats.

Alternatively, the Tech Pack I provides a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and a self-parking system. Tech Pack II came with an upgraded sat-nav system, wireless charging for phones and the preparation for a WiFi hotspot.

BMW 2 Series Sport PCP offers

It’s a popular trim but there’s not a great difference between SE and Sport. The latter costs from just over £26,700 but you could pay half as much if you’re happy with a used model, and there’s a good selection on BuyaCar.

The highlights of upgrading include adjustable ambient lighting for the cabin, sports seats for those in the front and a number of styling flourishes that give the 2 Series a more dynamic feel, with a generous smattering of gloss trim.

That’s reinforced by the enhanced choice of driving modes – with Sport and Sport+ modes available - some minor cosmetic modifications to the exterior and a different style of 17-inch alloy wheels.

BMW 2 Series M Sport PCP offers

Jump up to M Sport trim and BMW adds larger 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome-finish exhaust tailpipes and a bespoke M Sport bodykit plus M Sport door sill inserts. The engineers get involved too, fitting M Sport models with a retuned sports suspension

Inside there is a more sporty vibe with different interior trim, including suede-like fabric, and a pair of chunky front sports seats to keep driver and passenger better braced through bends.

Those who want a 2 Series with four-wheel drive (xDrive) should note that it’s only offered with the coupe – not the convertible – and only in Sport or M Sport spec models fitted with the 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Drivers after a more sporty look, though, should look for models with the M Sport Plus Pack. It includes a subtle styling kit, uprated brakes, sports seats and a Harman/Kardon audio system.

BMW M240i PCP offers

You could think of the M240i as the jalfrezi of BMW’s 2 Series range, somewhere between a regular 2 Series and the fire-breathing M2 on the scale of hot models. However, the price of a new example is pretty hot too – from almost £40,000.

The good news is that there is no need to spend that much, as there are used examples of the M240i on BuyaCar that cost half as much as a new model, while the savings on nearly-new cars are as enticing as the car itself.

Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged engine that delivers 340hp, there’s an uprated suspension and braking set up, variable-ratio steering, 18-inch alloy wheels and a body styling kit. For those moments when you need to make a quick exit, the automatic gearbox features a launch control mode.

It’s the only 2 Series to come with leather upholstery as standard, while there are heated front sports seats, plus dual-zone climate control and folding anti-dazzle mirrors included.
