Best deals for cars right now

1. Peugeot 3008

Used deals from £15,299
Monthly finance from £224*

More and more drivers are rushing to get behind the wheel of 'crossovers' in the 2020s. These are high-riding hatchbacks that channel some of the look and feel of a big SUV without the high running costs, and demand is especially hot for the crisply styled Peugeot 3008.

The model’s eye-catching design is what grabs you first, but things get even better when you climb inside and experience the well-designed and family-friendly interior. Newest models all come with Peugeot’s 'i-Cockpit' digital dashboard display and eight-inch touchscreen media system, and if you go for the Allure trim you get extra features including blind-spot monitors, all-round parking sensors and fancier interior trim.

The 3008 is as good to drive as it is to look at, and comes with a great range of petrol and diesel engines, and even a hybrid option. The 1.2-litre petrol is surprisingly smooth and punchy in the cheapest models, but it’s hard to argue with Peugeot’s diesel engine offerings - there are plenty of nearly new 1.5-litre HDi models here on BuyaCar. These could be perfect if you cover long distances or need lots of low engine speed muscle, otherwise, the 1.2-litre engine is worth a look.

2. Skoda Kodiaq

Used deals from £18,000
Monthly finance from £279*

After finding success with the quirky Yeti, Skoda wasted little time in creating more crossover models. It now has a trio of crossovers in various sizes and, while all of them are well worth considering, the biggest Kodiaq SUV is hard to beat for its combination of good looks, a pleasant drive and seven-seat practicality.

The third row of seats is standard in some versions and optional on others - depending on trim level - but if you pick the Kodiaq SE L version you can’t go wrong, as it includes plenty of kit and looks good.

We’d recommend the diesel for its muscle and reasonable fuel economy, and if you go diesel you also get the option of four-wheel drive.

While four-wheel drive is not essential fare for the average school run or commute - and four-wheel-drive models cost more to buy and use more fuel - it can make all the difference if you live in the countryside and regularly have to tackle slippery roads or need a car for towing duty. Meanwhile, if you want the most capable car for tackling snowy roads, winter tyres could make even more difference than whether you have four-wheel drive or not.

3. Volkswagen Up

Used deals from £4,897
Monthly finance from £102*

The smallest VW brings a special quality to the city car sector - it makes you think you’re driving a bigger car, despite being tiny enough to fit into practically any parking space and make it easy to whizz around tight urban streets.

The model has been around a while now, and in spite of extremely stiff competition from rivals such as the Fiat 500, Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo, the VW remains the one to beat thanks to regular updating. It’s particularly roomy with three- or five-door options, and drives brilliantly around town while coping well with longer journeys. VW owns Seat and Skoda and these brands have their own versions of the Up - the Mii and Citigo - which potentially offer even better value, though brand new versions are only available with electric power.

There's an electric e-Up, too, but some of the best deals are available on the 1.0-litre petrol version which also offers the prospect of 50mpg motoring - meaning pretty low fuel bills to begin with. Beats and R-Line versions lift the spec levels respectably.

4. Ford Fiesta

Used deals from £7,999
Monthly finance from £151*

The Ford Fiesta is one of the best-known names in the small hatch sector, and it’s been a long-time best-seller for good reason. The latest version is an absolute cracker, offering pretty much everything you could hope for in a supermini - good looks, a roomy and practical interior, affordable running costs. The icing on the cake is the Fiesta is great fun to drive too.

The latest version has been around since 2017 and is the biggest Fiesta we’ve seen to date. Its long list of credentials includes an excellent range of engines, including a diesel option that’s become something of a rarity in a small hatchback. Most versions get a tablet style touchscreen media system with Ford’s excellent SYNC 3 operating sytem, and there’s an array of the latest safety tech available dependent on spec.

For the best combination of economy and driving pleasure we’d look out for a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine which delivers perky performance and up to 58.9mpg. The luxurious Titanium spec is especially appealing with cruise control, parking sensors and sat-nav all on the spec list.

5. Renault Captur

Used deals from £12,426
Monthly finance from £208*

The wildly popular Nissan Juke paved the way for high-riding, supermini-sized 'crossovers' that look like mini-SUVs, but it’s arguably the Juke’s Renault stablemate (Nissan and Renault are part of the same company), that’s making the biggest waves today.

Both cars are excellent products but it’s hard to ignore the chiselled design of the Captur which is more elegant and grown-up than the playfully-styled Juke. The contemporary design feel continues inside the Captur, and the upmarket feel will surprise owners of old-school Renault Clios. As will the level of standard equipment which includes adaptive cruise control and snazzy 17-inch alloy wheels.

There’s a diesel option and three petrols, of which we’d pick the middle version for its blend of performance and fuel economy. It’s called the 1.3-litre TCe 130 and you could have it delivered in days if you purchase from BuyaCar.

6. Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport

Used deals from £9,626
Monthly finance from £171*

With fashionable SUVs all the rage, and the Vauxhall badge overshadowed by upmarket German brands when it comes to large family cars, some might say the Insignia Grand Sport is the right car at the wrong time.

If you're after a great deal on a good looking car, though, you should be rubbing your hands, as this means you could get a fantastic car for your monthly budget. The latest big hatchback from Vauxhall is one of the best affordable large family cars - and the cavernous estate version makes a great buy too.

All Insignia Grand Sports offer a great driving experience, bags of room for five adults inside a well-equipped and comfortable cabin, high spec levels and great prices.

7. Kia e-Niro and Niro PHEV

Used Kia e-Niro deals from £29,995
Monthly finance from £535*
Used Kia Niro PHEV deals from £15,400
Monthly finance from £244*

The future of motoring may be electric, but advances in electric technology mean that for some motorists the future is here already. The Kia e-Niro crossover is one of the best of a new breed of battery-powered cars that, like the Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq and Hyundai Kona Electric, offers serious real-world range on a single charge.

With a 64kWh battery the e-Niro is good for a claimed 282 miles of driving, which should make ‘range anxiety’ a thing of the past. If you can charge at home and rarely go more than 100 miles away from home, you may never need to fill up away from home again - at a petrol station or a charging point.

For drivers who aren’t quite ready for the all-electric version, Kia also offers a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Niro that offers almost 40 miles of electric only driving. You will have to charge it every 30 miles or so, though, to keep it using electric power. Fail to charge the plug-in hybrid model, however, and you'll get little benefit from the electric motor and you might as well get a much cheaper petrol model.

In other respects the Kia Niro offers good looks, impressive practicality and great specification levels, and its styling - a halfway house between an SUV proper and a regular hatchback - offers a practical and appealing compromise for many drivers.

8. Land Rover Defender

Used deals from £50,100
Monthly finance from £617*

It may not be quite in tune with the times - as a hardcore off-roader - but there’s no doubt the new Land Rover Defender is one of the cars of the moment. It’s basically a Land Rover Discovery with a more retro and off-road-inspired look, intended to recover some of the brand's street-cred following a slew of road-focused models.

There's no doubt it looks the part, with design cues picked up from iconic original Defender and Land Rover Series models. The interior is a delight too, with a contemporary cool utilitarian feel that doesn’t skimp on tech - it features Land Rover's best touchscreen system to date.

It’s a brand new in-demand car, but we’ve already got long-wheelbase models with delivery mileage here on BuyaCar.
